Everything We Know About Jason Momoa's Aquaman Movie

If neither Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice nor Justice League turned out to be your jam, don't worry. There's a new superhero coming to the big screen, and we're already in love with him — and his late, great chest hair. Jason Momoa is taking on the title role in Aquaman, his standalone DC Comics movie. We already had a few pictures of him on the set of Justice League and then got an even better idea of his character when we finally saw the epic team-up flick. We've got a long way to go until Aquaman bows, but now that the trailer has come out, there's no better time to reflect on everything else we know.

The studio released the new logo in May 2017 at the start of production.

2. James Wan Is Directing

You know Wan from horror films like Insidious and The Conjuring (which is likely why he cast Patrick Wilson as Aquaman's evil half-brother, Orm), but he'll be taking on new territory with Aquaman. He did direct 2015's Furious 7, so we know he knows how to handle an action flick. During a panel at Wondercon, Wan brought up the potential of "sea monsters and cool stuff" in Aquaman, and the trailer features a ton of just that.

3. Amber Heard and Nicole Kidman Are Costarring

Heard stars as Mera, a character who eventually becomes Aquaman's wife in the comic books. The rest of the cast includes legends like Nicole Kidman as Aquaman's mother, Atlanna, and Willem Dafoe as Vulko, a trusted advisor of the aquatic superhero.

4. Black Manta Is the Villain

Way back in August 2016, The Wrap reported that the villain of the Aquaman movie might be Black Manta, a character from the comic books. Warner Bros. confirmed the news in January 2017 when it announced The Get Down actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II would take on the role. We get our first glimpse of him in the trailer, which you can see above.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder (who had to step down from Justice League to deal with a family tragedy) tweeted out this image of Momoa as Aquaman in 2015. We've gotten plenty more looks at the character since then, but the first one is still pretty good.

In a Warner Bros. press release sent out in 2017, the exact filming locations were revealed and they're all stunning. The shoot is primarily filming in locations along the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, as well as Newfoundland, Sicily, and Tunisia. The rest of the shots will happen at Village Roadshow Studios, which has the massive backlot and VRS soundstages necessary for a movie of this scale.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, producer Charles Roven explained how Aquaman will fit into DC's larger story: "While each movie stands alone, they're all part of one long arc of storytelling." He clarified the timeline while chatting with Cinema Blend, saying that Aquaman isn't a Justice League prequel the way Wonder Woman is. Instead, it will take place after the events of the ensemble film, which came out in 2017. "Aquaman will make reference [to Justice League]," he revealed. "There will be some reference of something that preceded Aquaman that will be in Aquaman. I believe that is the intention."

The first real footage of Justice League was revealed at Comic-Con before the film's 2017 release, and Momoa's Aquaman was in a bunch of it. As more and more trailers were released in the lead-up to Justice League's premiere, we were treated to even more Momoa! Fortunately it's been enough to keep us occupied until Aquaman drops its first official trailer.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in June, Momoa's costars had plenty to say about how his boisterous real-life personality shines through in the film. "You always know where Jason is – you hear loud rock and roll, a booming voice, people laughing, and something breaking or falling," Amber Heard told the magazine. "He'd make the worst ninja ever."

Nicole Kidman agreed, saying, "He's just biiiiiig. He's hugely charismatic, you can see why he has this fan base, and he's got the best hair." EW also revealed that many of the jokes Momoa ad-libbed during filming made it into the final film, so you can expect plenty of humour.

The studio released the first teaser poster on July 16 with the tagline "Home Is Calling," several days ahead of the release of the movie trailer.

The first trailer dropped at Comic-Con in late July.

You'll be able to see it in theatres on Dec. 21, 2018.
