Ashley Tisdale's Upcoming Netflix Series Is the Grown-Up Disney Show We've Always Wanted
With the entire Disney vault under wraps, the need for a dose of good old fashioned Disney nostalgia is real. Luckily, Netflix is swooping in to grace us with Merry Happy Whatever, a new show starring two of our favourite Disney alums: Ashley Tisdale and Bridgit Mendler! The first season of the holiday-themed anthology will be set during Christmas and feature eight episodes following the Quinn family and their not-so-merry Christmas. It sounds like the grown-up Disney series we've always wanted.
In an Instagram post on Saturday, Tisdale announced her involvement in the series, writing, "YOU GUYS!!! I didn't book a pilot I booked a SERIES for @netflix 😭😭 I've been wanting to do this for like 4 years and it happened!! SO excited and can't wait to start shooting!!! #MerryHappyWhatever." We think Sharpay would be proud, honestly.
The former High School Musical star will play Kayla, a woman who recently separated from her husband and is on the hunt to find what's next . . . while also stirring up some major drama in the Quinn household, according to a Deadline exclusive. Meanwhile, Good Luck Charlie's Bridgit Mendler will play Emily, the most independent member of the Quinn family, who's home for the holidays with her musician boyfriend who will more than likely butt heads with her overprotective father. Sounds like a classic holiday scenario!
The show will also star The Parent Trap's Dennis Quaid as the patriarch of the Quinn family, while Santa Clarita Diet's Adam Rose will play Todd, the son-in-law who drinks with his fellow in-laws as a coping mechanism for his frustration at having married into such a tight-knit family. Hayes MacArthur will star in the show as Sean, the only son of the Quinn family and a family man whose biggest priority is watching the Eagles game on TV. Mendler's Undateable co-star Brent Morin will also join in on the holiday fun as Emily Quinn's boyfriend Matt in the upcoming series — which means there's some major onscreen chemistry to look forward to!
No official release date has been set for Merry Happy Whatever, but with so many familiar faces in one cast, it feels like "we've finally found what we've been looking for."
