Expect to See These Netflix Shows Dominate Award Season

12/12/2018 - 02:25 AM

With the recent Golden Globe nominations [1], award season has officially kicked off. And while you may immediately think of movies when you hear "award season," TV is just as involved. TV series are celebrated at the Golden Globe Awards, the Critics' Choice Film + TV Awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Academy Awards (aka the BAFTAs), as well as various Guild-specific shows.

There are so platforms to watch TV shows [2] on that it can be hard to keep up with all the different critically-acclaimed shows. After all, there's no shortage of amazing, creative shows [3] to watch, but not all of them are accessible on all platforms. Serious contenders like The Handmaid's Tale [4], Westworld, and This Is Us [5], for instance, are not available on Netflix; in fact, most shows that belong to premium cable channels such as Starz [6] and HBO [7] don't make deals with streaming platforms at all, since they often have their own exclusive streaming options.

But there's still good news: if you have Netflix [8], you can catch up on several of the shows with serious awards buzz. From spy dramas to horror series and more, check out five of the most talked-about series you can catch on Netflix.

Bodyguard

The Richard Madden thriller, following a morally-conflicted veteran guarding a politician, nabbed surprise Golden Globe nominations for best drama and for Madden's work as leading actor in a drama.

GLOW

Now in its second season, the 1980s-set series about ladies' wrestling has gotten critical acclaim across the board. While it was snubbed for a Golden Globe nomination for best comedy or musical, leading lady Alison Brie [10] did get a nod.

Ozark

Although Netflix originals got fewer nods than perhaps expected, its twisty drama Ozark remains a strong contender, and Jason Bateman [12] received a nomination for best leading actor in a drama series.

The Haunting of Hill House

One of the breakout hits of the year was Netflix's late-in-the-game horror offering. Despite a lack of major nominations at the Golden Globes, the show's strong support from segments of the industry (as evidenced by its Writers Guild of America nomination [14]) makes it a dark horse to watch in the future.

House Of Cards

Although the political drama failed to garner any major Golden Globe nominations, it's still not to be counted out — it's been one of TV's most prestigious dramas for years.
