Forget Going Out — You Need to Watch These Movies That Are SO Bad, They're Amazing

13/09/2018 - 12:50 AM

I am a firm believer in never being ashamed of anything that makes you happy. If it isn't hurting anyone, there's no reason you should call it a "guilty pleasure." The definition of pleasure is "a feeling of happy satisfaction and enjoyment," so who has time to feel shame about something you enjoy? Not I, friends. Not. I.

Which is why I have no problem admitting that I love a good bad movie. The kind that has a ridiculous plot, but the actors actually have chemistry and you can't help but smile whenever they do something awkward. Or, the kind that is so hilariously bad, it's the perfect balm to any horrible day. You know exactly the kind of movies I'm talking about, because you probably have several you watch religiously. You don't love the movie in spite of it being bad; you love it because it's so bad. The crappy quality is part of its charm. It's just so damn bad, it's good!

However, there's a thin line between so bad it's good and plain old bad. Obviously, everyone has different taste and what might work for you doesn't work for others, but there are a few factors of every good bad movie that make it easier to differentiate:

  • The movie is critically a bad movie. No more than two thumbs up.
  • It can't know it's a bad movie. This has to be a movie that people genuinely thought was good when they were making it. Parodies and satires that are knowingly terrible do not count!
  • You have to love it because it's bad, not in spite of it being bad.

Now, without further ado, I've rounded up some of the best bad movies available to stream on Netflix. Some of these are personal favourites of mine, but all of them fulfil the requirements previously mentioned. Check them out ahead and enjoy the ridiculously terrible amazingness of them all.

  • A Christmas Prince (2017)

You already know how we feel [2] about this movie. 10/10, we definitely recommend.

    Bad Ass (2012)

Danny Trejo wears a fanny pack and a cap, goes around busting skulls, and looks really mean while doing it. As a fan of Danny Trejo and people who look mean while busting skulls, I can't help but appreciate how incredibly awful this movie is.

    Aeon Flux (2005)

Aeon Flux definitely doesn't mean to be as funny as it is. I think they were going for The Matrix, but that isn't what they ended up with.

    Catwoman (2004)

Everything about this movie is terrible, but somehow Halle Berry [6] made it worth it. She is an Oscar-winning actress, after all, and even though she couldn't make this movie good, she made it enjoyable. Except for that scene with the catnip. I have no idea what that was.

    Deep Blue Sea

Essentially, this movie is about genetically engineered sharks trying to eat a bunch of scientists. Seems like your classic formula, right? All I have to say is L.L. Cool J kills a shark for eating his bird. That should really say everything.

    Watch it here [8].

    Charlie St. Cloud

Zac Efron [9] is so pretty in this movie that it could get away with its hot messiness just on that alone.

    Watch it here [10].

    Sharknado

While the rest of the movies in this series are clearly made for the laughs, the first definitely thought it was doing something big. It clearly knew it was going to be the big fish of all shark movies, but it also took itself a little more seriously than it should have.

    Watch it here [11].

    Mortal Kombat (1995)

This movie took place in the '90s so we can't be totally shocked about how it came out. But wow, those special effects. The one thing that isn't to play around with in this movie is the soundtrack [12]. Like a majority of movies made in the '90s, this one has jams.
