The Best Movie Kisses of All Time, From "The Notebook" to "Spider-Man"

21/09/2023 - 12:30 PM

As Cher once proclaimed in "The Shoop Shoop Song," "If you wanna know if he loves you so, it's in his kiss." And since we're big fans of romance around here — from iconic romantic comedies [1] to sexy dramas [2] — you might not be surprised that we're also fans of big, bold onscreen kisses. From tentative first kisses that cement a growing love, to moments of deep passion that make our toes curl, to love declarations that make us cheer, there are so many types of movie kisses that we love.

Perhaps not surprisingly, there are some actors who come up on our list again and again. Ryan Gosling [3] and Rachel McAdams [4] gave us some of the greatest movie kisses of all time in "The Notebook", but Gosling also had some iconic smooches in "Crazy Stupid Love" and "Blue Valentine", as did McAdams in "About Time" and "The Vow [5]." Other actors who made the list multiple times? Heath Ledger [6], Tom Hanks [7], Carey Mulligan [8], Colin Firth [9], Sandra Bullock [10], and many more.

Ahead, we rounded up some of our absolute favourite movie kisses of all time. See which iconic lip locks made our list.

— Additional reporting by Brea Cubit, Shannon Vestal, Quinn Keaney, and Victoria Edel

"Romeo + Juliet"

The classic star-crossed lovers, Juliet (Claire Danes [12]) and Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio [13]), steal a kiss when nobody's looking.

"The Notebook"

Noah (Ryan Gosling [14]) and Allie (Rachel McAdams [15]) share a lot of kisses, but nothing beats the post-canoe, pouring-rain moment — "It still isn't over!"

"Twilight"

Bella (Kristen Stewart [16]) and Edward (Robert Pattinson [17]) share a lot of kisses during the Twilight [18] saga, but our favourites are their very first kiss and the one they share at the school dance.

"Dirty Dancing"

"Dirty Dancing" [19]'s Baby (Jennifer Grey) and Johnny (Patrick Swayze) are one of the best movie couples of all time, but their best kiss comes when they spend a day dancing and fooling around.

"My Girl"

Best friends Thomas (Macaulay Culkin [20]) and Vada (Anna Chlumsky) share their first kiss by the water in this super-sweet "My Girl" scene.

"You've Got Mail"

After months of chatting online, Joe (Tom Hanks [21]) and Kathleen (Meg Ryan [22]) bring their romance to the real world after he says, "Don't cry, shopgirl, don't cry." Saving a first kiss for the movie's final moment is bold, but Nora Ephron of course nails it in "You've Got Mail."

"Silver Linings Playbook"

Pat (Bradley Cooper [23]) and Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence [24]) have a picture-perfect first kiss at the end of "Silver Linings Playbook."

"Never Been Kissed"

We'll be honest, your mileage may vary on this one. In "Never Been Kissed," Josie (Drew Barrymore [25]) goes undercover at a high school to get the dirt on what school is really like these days. But she quickly develops feelings for her teacher Sam (Michael Vartan) — and he feels the same. When he finds out she's actually not a student, he feels betrayed (which is kind of weird of him, to be honest), but she reveals all in her newspaper and he meets her at the baseball field for her very first kiss. Even if the movie itself is questionable, Josie's first smooch lives up to the hype.

"Breakfast at Tiffany's"

Paul (George Peppard) brings Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) into a kissing embrace as the rain comes down.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"

After having a crush on her for several years, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe [26]) finally kisses Cho (Katie Leung).

Watch out, Robin (Chris O'Donnell)! Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman [88]) is not just a clever name.

They may not be Danny and Sandy, but Michael (Maxwell Caulfield) and Stephanie (Michelle Pfeiffer [91]) have smouldering chemistry.

"City of Angels"

Maggie (Meg Ryan [92]) is literally getting kissed by an angel (Nicolas Cage [93]).

"Valentine's Day"

Perhaps we love this moment from "Valentine's Day" — when Taylor Swift locks lips with then-boyfriend Taylor Lautner [94] — so much because time has made it so funny, but you can't say it isn't iconic to a generation.

"Bring It On"

Torrance (Kirsten Dunst [95]) gets the guy (Jesse Bradford) at the end of "Bring It On [96]."

It's a severe time of distress that leads Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson [97]) to kiss for the first time.

"About Time"

Rachel McAdams [98] is a pro at great onscreen kisses, and this time around, she steams up the screen with Domhnall Gleeson.

"A Star Is Born" (2018)
