Captain Marvel [1] is a landmark film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe [2] for a lot of reasons. It's the first film, after a decade of Marvel movies [3], to have a female protagonist and a female director [4], and it's also the last movie before Avengers: Endgame [5] brings the entire first three phases [6] of the MCU to a close. Captain Marvel also has the distinction of being one of only two movies (the other being the World War II-set Captain America: The First Avenger) not set in the present day.

The origin story [7] and early adventures [8] ofCarol Danvers [9] are set in the 1990s, and the film definitely leans hard into that '90s aesthetic [10], from its visuals [11] to its '90s-action-movie style [12].
