There Is Something Incredibly Ironic About Cersei and Tywin Lannister's Fates on GOT

Warning: the following post contains spoilers for episode five of Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones [1] creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss might forget a Starbucks coffee cup [2] in the background of a scene every now and then, but when it comes to a main character's death [3], every tiny detail is thoroughly planned out . . . especially the date. During the penultimate episode of the series, the wickedly evil Cersei Lannister meets her end [4]. While it wasn't Arya Stark, her brother Tyrion, or even Greyworm who has the joy of ending her life, it's the date of Cersei's death that burns her in the most brutal way imaginable.

Episode five, titled "The Bells," aired on Sunday, May 12, 2019, which to most of us, is known as the second to last episode of the series [5]. But in the United States and several other countries around the world, it's Mother's Day [6], and we all know nothing means more to Cersei than her children [7]. Throughout all of Cersei's eyebrow-raising, murderous, and incestuous tendencies throughout the series, her defence has always been that she's protecting her children. Killing Cersei, Jaime, and their unborn child [8] with rubble is absolutely an underwhelming death at first glance, but killing her on Mother's Day [9] no less is savage.

This isn't the first time a main character has met his or her end on a paradoxical date. Who could forget in the season four finale when Tywin Lannister is killed by Tyrion using Joffrey's crossbow? As you'll recall, Tywin is on the toilet when he's killed by his son, who's riled up after being accused of poisoning Joffrey and seeing his father with Shae. But the plot twist is the day it takes place — the episode "The Children" aired on June 15, 2014, which was Father's Day [11] of that year in the U.S.

Tywin Lannister was far from Father of the Year, as he constantly ridiculed Tyrion for being the reason his wife died, but just like Cersei, everything that Tywin did, he said he did for his children. It's not a coincidence that Cersei is killed on Mother's Day and Tywin on Father's Day in 2014. Ahead, see how the internet is reacting to the irony of Cersei Lannister's death on this day.
