Here's Who You Can Expect to See When Downton Abbey Hits the Big Screen

03/08/2018 - 09:43 PM

Our favourite British period drama, Downton Abbey [1], is officially continuing the saga with a movie, and we cannot wait to see the Crawley family bring the drama to the big screen. Though not everyone from the original cast [2] will appear in the film — Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again [3] actress Lily James, who played Lady Rose Aldridge, is out — plenty of actors have been confirmed as reprising their roles, and we're here to spill the (English) tea. Though there's no word about what the plotline might be, this is who you can expect to see when Downton Abbey finally returns.

Elizabeth McGovern

The beautiful Elizabeth McGovern will reprise her role as American heiress Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, in the upcoming movie project.

Maggie Smith

Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham — a fan favourite and Cora's sassy mother-in-law — will appear in the movie, despite Maggie Smith's initial hesitance [4].

Michelle Dockery

Michelle Dockery's character, Lady Mary Crawley — Cora's oldest daughter and arguably the series' protagonist, despite her constant scheming — is another member of the Crawley family set to appear in the movie.

Laura Carmichael

Mary's younger sister, Lady Edith Crawley (played by Laura Carmichael), has also been confirmed for the movie cast, and we can't wait to see what happens now that Edith's bad luck in love has finally changed (and now that she'll outrank Mary).

Joanne Froggatt

Anna Bates, the always affable lady maid to Mary Crawley and new mother, will appear in the movie, played by Joanne Froggatt.

Hugh Bonneville

Hugh Bonneville will reprise his role as the likable head of the Crawley household, Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham.

Allen Leech

Irish actor Allen Leech (in addition to his upcoming role in Bohemian Rhapsody [5]) will appear in the movie as Tom Branson, the former family chauffeur, who returns to the Crawley estate with his daughter, Sybbie, after his wife, youngest Crawley daughter Sybil, dies during childbirth.

Sophie McShera

Though kitchen maid Daisy (played by Sophie McShera) moves to Mr. Mason's farm at the end of the final season, it has been confirmed that she will be appear in the movie (and hopefully back in the kitchen with Mrs. Patmore!).

Robert James-Collier

Due to Mr. Carson's struggle with cerebral palsy and his forced resignation, the formerly duplicitous Thomas Barrow (played by Robert James-Collier) is reintroduced at the end of season six as the new butler, which is the role he'll take on in the upcoming movie.

Brendan Coyle

Brendan Coyle, who plays Anna's husband, the chronically unlucky John Bates, will return in the movie after welcoming his first child with Anna at the end of season six.

Phyllis Logan

Downton Abbey's prim but sweet housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes, will appear in the film, the role reprised by Phyllis Logan.

Jim Carter

Jim Carter, who plays former butler Mr. Carson, is confirmed to appear in the movie alongside his new wife, Mrs. Hughes, and we'll get the opportunity to see how his palsy has changed his relationship.

Penelope Wilton

Isobel Crawley (play by Penelope Wilton) will return as the mother of Mary's deceased first husband, Matthew, and newly married to Lord Dickie Merton.

Lesley Nicol

Downton's perfectionist cook and mother figure to Daisy, Mrs. Patmore, will return in the movie, played by Lesley Nicol.
