Ed Sheeran's Brit Awards Performance Will Make You Want to Call Your Nan

22/02/2018 - 03:30 PM

Ed Sheeran picked up the global success award at Wednesday's Brit Awards in London [1], and while the accidentally hilarious introduction from Elton John [2] offered light relief, Ed's stripped-down performance earlier in the night brought out a whole other set of emotions. The singer performed the tearjerking "Supermarket Flowers," the final song on his Grammy-winning album Divide, accompanied by a choir.

While the lyrics might have you thinking the song is about his mum, it's actually a tribute to his grandmother [3], who died while Ed was recording the album. The track, which is written from the perspective of Ed's mum (hence the lyric "you were an angel in the shape of my mum") was never intended to go on the album, but Ed told Capital FM DJ Zane Lowe that his grandfather told him he had to release it [4].

The song, which Ed said was "really hard to write," will definitely hit home for anyone who's lost a loved one. Take a look for yourself now, but be prepared for tears.
