Frances McDormand Accepts Her BAFTA, Reminding Us She Has "a Little Trouble With Compliance"

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri took home five BAFTA awards on Sunday night [1], and Frances McDormand, who took home the award for Leading Actress, used the opportunity to discuss the film's poignant, relevant themes. Dressed in a lipstick-printed dress that contrasted the black gowns that other female attendees chose to wear in support of the Time's Up movement [2], McDormand began by saying "I have a little trouble with compliance. But I want you to know that I stand in full solidarity with my sisters tonight in black."

She then went on to praise the protests that the film has inspired. "I appreciate a well-organised act of civil disobedience, and I'm thrilled that activists all over the world have been inspired by the set decoration of the three billboards in Martin's film, and have taken to the streets and let it be a part of the positive public discourse that's happening." This felt particularly poignant in London, where only a few days ago the billboards were recreated by Justice4Grenfell [3], a group of campaigners fighting for the prosecution of those responsible for the tragic tower block fire in June 2017 [4].

The actress then went on to discuss her early career (when she was told she was not "naturally gifted") and got laughs from the crowd as she explained that she had to "work at it". Having taken home a Golden Globe [5], a SAG Award [6], and now a BAFTA, it's looking highly likely that Frances will be adding an Oscar to her mantelpiece [7] in a few weeks too.
