Euphoria Addresses Some Very Real Issues, but Not Without a Few Moments of Comic Relief

12/08/2019 - 12:15 PM

Euphoria [1] tackles a number of serious subjects — addiction, race, identity, abuse, grief — and doesn't hold back [2] in addressing them. The boundary-pushing show's unflinching look [3] into the lives of high school students can become pretty heavy to watch [4]. But amid the important (and very necessary [5]) topic discussions, there are a few bits of comic relief, notably from lead character Rue Bennett (Zendaya [6]). Her dark humour and charm make for some hilarious and refreshing moments for viewers [7], who are constantly reeling from all the emotional sequences [8]. Ahead, check out five of the funniest scenes from season one.

When Rue Gives a Lesson on Sending Unsolicited Sexual Photos

Euphoria [10] isn't afraid to go full-frontal [11], nor does it shy away from having an open conversation about sexting, specifically unsolicited d*ck pics. In episode three, Rue does a classic fourth-wall break [12] to explain the difference between "terrifying," "horrifying," and "acceptable" penis pictures. Take notes, people!

When Rue and Jules Get Matching Lip Tattoos

When Rue and Jules's (Hunter Schafer) relationship begins to grow stronger in the fifth episode, they visit Ashtray (Javon "Wanna" Walton) to get matching tattoos of "Rules [13]," a portmanteau of their names. But when Jules sees the final ink on the inside of Rue's bottom lip, she looks a bit mortified. "I love you, Rue, but there's no f*cking way I'm doing that," she says. And then, well, she does it anyway. Ah, to be a teenager [14].

When Rue and Lexi Threaten Gia's Boyfriend

Rue and Lexi (Maude Apatow) pull the boyfriend of Rue's sister, Gia (Storm Reid), into a creepy, vacant room at a party to intimidate him about never hurting Gia. The scene is by far one of the funniest moments in the first season [15]. It's especially hilarious if you catch Rue's references to The Wire characters [16] when she names a list of people she'd sic on Gia's beau if he tries to get too sexual with her. "I will call Omar, I will call Marlo, I wall call Avon, I will call Brother Mouzone, I wall call f*ckin' Bodie, and I will call f*cking Stringer, and I will have these motherf*ckers standing outside of your front lawn, do you hear me?" Rue says during the confrontation in episode six. Snaps for the cleverly protective big sis [17]!

When Rue Goes Into Detective Mode

By the time episode seven rolls around, Rue has an inkling that something is off about Jules, and it has to do with Nate (Jacob Elordi [18]). That's when Rue and Lexi assume the roles of Detective Bennett and Detective Howard [19] as Rue connects the dots and details her theory about how Jules and Nate are linked [20]. She gets most of it correct before declaring herself brilliant. "Hey, mom, I'm a f*cking genius!" just might be my new Twitter bio.

When Rue and Jules Get Down on the Dance Floor in Front of Nate

Nate puts Jules through the ringer in the season one, but Jules is still able to enjoy a brief, carefree moment with Rue at the school dance in episode eight. The best part? Zendaya [21]'s subtle nod to her hometown Oakland [22] while she sings Too $hort's "Blow the Whistle" before giving Nate two middle fingers. You love to see it.
