Joe Dempsie Teases Gendry's Return — and the Epic "End Game" — on Game of Thrones

As we push further into 2018, the long wait for the final season [1] of Game of Thrones [2] drags on. At this stage in the game, we're still wringing our hands over the season seven cliffhangers [3], obsessing over season eight theories [4], and just generally freaking out. Now, thanks to actor Joe Dempsie's new interview with Digital Spy [5], we may have one more piece to add to the vast puzzle that is the show's mind-melting conclusion.

As you probably know, Dempsie plays Gendry on Game of Thrones. We've been on quite the journey with this particular bastard son of Robert Baratheon; he was missing entirely for seasons four, five, and six before resurfacing in season seven [6] to help Jon Snow retrieve a wight from beyond The Wall. Now that that particular mission is over, though, will he vanish once more into thin air? Luckily, no! Dempsie confirmed he'll be back in the remaining episodes, saying, "I've done well out of it this year, for sure."

"The only real hope I had for the character was just that he would be there when the reckoning came."

When it comes to Gendry's fate in the epic ending sequences, that's a little more up in the air. "We never shoot in chronological order — so you might have people coming in at the beginning and at the end, but it doesn't necessarily mean they make it all the way through!" Even so, it's sounding like Gendry will get pretty deep into the final battles. "The only real hope I had for the character was just that he would be there when the reckoning came," Dempsie said. "You got the sense — even back in season three — that this was a show that was building towards some incredible climax, so you just wanted to be there when it all happened."

"Not even necessarily just from a character point-of-view, [but] from a personal point of view," he continued. "To be stood there on the set when they're making that ending. That end game. So yeah, I'm very happy to be involved and be on set for season eight."

Even though Dempsie didn't give much else away about how Gendry could fare in these crucial episodes, it sure sounds like he's around witness whatever "climax" we're building up to. We can already hear those wheels turning in your heads, Game of Thrones fans. Don't worry, ours are turning, too.
