18/09/2019 - 05:02 PM

If your idea of a horror movie is a tense, psychological thriller, then we suggest you stop reading, because we're here to discuss the scariest, goriest, most in-your-face horror movies currently streaming on Netflix. From blood-soaked slashers [1] to horror anthology movies [2] that might scar you for life, we combed through all the scary movies Netflix has to offer [3] to unearth the best and the bloodiest.

The Perfection

What you're in for: Prolific violinists Charlotte (Allison Williams) and Lizzie (Logan Browning) are both enamoured and intimidated by each other. But once their shared traumas are revealed, the line between perfection and psychosis spirals into a sinister obsession with revenge.

Notable gore: Basically people cutting off their own hands.

1922

What you're in for: This tense, disturbing Stephen King adaptation sees Thomas Jane playing a backwoods farmer who convinces his son (Dylan Schmid) to help murder his own mother (Molly Parker) in 1922. Unfortunately their choice continues to haunt them, long after she's gone.

Notable gore: If you're scared of rats, do not watch this movie.

Would You Rather

What you're in for: A sadistic billionaire forces a group of people to answer life's tough questions: would you rather slit your own eyeball open with a razor or get your hand blown up by a stick of dynamite? Fun.

Notable gore: See examples above.

The Black Room

What you're in for: A couple's new dream home turns into a living, breathing nightmare when they discover an evil spirit in the basement.

Notable gore: A ton of blood, as well as the violent deaths of two repairmen.

Gerald's Game

What you're in for: The thriller is based on King's 1992 novel about a woman (Carla Gugino) whose husband (Bruce Greenwood) unexpectedly dies after handcuffing her to the bed in an effort to spice up their marriage, leaving her trapped in their remote lake house. Plagued by visions of past trauma and her dead husband (and what looks like a rabid dog), she has to fight for her life and her sanity.

Notable gore: The method she uses to finally get out of the handcuffs is so, so stomach-turning.

The Babysitter

What you're in for: To be totally honest, I find this movie starring Samara Weaving as a killer babysitter pretty funny and heartfelt. But that doesn't stop the McG-directed horror-comedy from being drenched in blood as Weaving's pal's get rightfully picked off by a clever kid.

Notable gore: Imagine if the elaborate pranks Kevin sets for the robbers in Home Alone were actually deadly, and then you'll get a good idea of all the ways young Cole (Judah Lewis) takes out his captors.

Here Alone

What you're in for: The indie film follows a woman named Ann (Lucy Walters) as she tries to survive alone [11] in the wilds of upstate New York after escaping an outbreak of a mysterious virus that turns the infected into 28 Days Later-esque zombies (read: fast as hell).

Notable gore: The aforementioned zombies chowing down on humans.

Holidays

What you're in for: Holidays consists of eight short films dedicated to different holidays, directed by a mix of unknown and established directors (*cough* Kevin Smith *cough*). It's a bit uneven, but it's guaranteed to ruin at least a few of your favourite days of the year . . . in the best way possible.

Notable gore: Someone's heart getting ripped out with a box cutter, as well as a creature that's a mix between a crucified Jesus and the Easter Bunny. Wholesome, family fun, right?

47 Meters Down

What you're in for: Two sisters looking to bond on a Mexico holiday end up sucked into a nightmare when a shark dive leaves them stranded on the ocean floor with a bunch of hungry great whites stalking above them.

Notable gore: Shark attacks are a little messy, you know?

Hush

What you're in for: Easily one of the best horror movies of last year, Hush follows a deaf, mute writer over the course of one night as she's hunted by a masked maniac.

Notable gore: Multiple people getting shot by a crossbow, King Joffrey-style.

XX

What you're in for: This horror anthology has a f*cked-up story to suit each and every scary movie aficionado's taste.

Notable gore: There are some issues with fingernails in the "Her Only Living Son" short.

Carrie

What you're in for: Sissy Spacek plays a tormented high school outcast (and secret telekinetic) who gets her revenge on bullies at the prom in this Stephen King adaptation.

Notable gore: Sure, this 1976 flick is a product of its time and isn't as in-your-face-gory as you might expect, but just look at that photo of pig's blood-covered Carrie.

Cabin Fever

What you're in for: For whatever reason, Eli Roth decided to remake his 2002 gore-fest Cabin Fever starring Rider Strong over again in 2016 with a handful of Hollywood newcomers. Luckily the premise — and gross-out factor — remains the same in both: a group of teens heads to a lakeside cabin one weekend and end up contracting a deadly, flesh-eating virus that wipes them out one by one.

Notable gore: In addition to all the body horror courtesy of the virus, a woman is mauled to death by a rabid dog, someone is beaten in the head with a shovel, and another is lit on fire. A great weekend getaway, all around!

Watch the 2002 original [18] or the 2016 remake [19] now.

Ravenous

What you're in for: This is actually a pretty introspective and beautiful movie, as far as films in the zombie genre go. That being said, watching a small group of desperate survivors attempt to navigate the aftermath of a zombie-like outbreak in rural Quebec is going to come with some nauseating moments.

Notable gore: It's a zombie movie, so prepare for free-flowing intestines and blood.

Death Note

What you're in for: This goofy adaptation won't necessarily give you nightmares, but there's still plenty of gore since the movie tells the story of Light, a teenager given the ability to murder whoever he chooses with a swipe of a pen.

Notable gore: Decapitation, for starters.
