If asked to name your top five favourite John Mayer [1] songs (or probably even your top 20 . . . ), chances are "The Heart of Life" wouldn't make the cut, and that's not because it isn't a good song — it's because you probably have never heard it. Taken from Mayer's third studio album, Continuum, the song was never even released as a single, but that's not stopping ABC from developing a drama series of the same name [2], with Mayer at the helm. Yeah, we're confused, too, but definitely intrigued.
Heart of Life will follow two sets of adult siblings from vastly different worlds who discover they share a father, forcing them to revisit everything they thought they knew about their shared parent and their separate childhoods. Mayer will serve as executive producer alongside writer Ben Queen (the guy behind NBC's Powerless), and though little has been revealed aside from the premise, we at least know three of the stars who will be leading the series.
Katie Findlay as Sydney Winter
Katie Findlay (who was most recently seen as series regular Lucy in the third and final season of FX's Man Seeking Woman) will star in the series as Sydney Winter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sydney's an ambitious type-A working woman poised to take over her father's architecture firm [3] — that is, until she must reassess everything she thought she knew about her father after discovering a set of siblings she hadn't known existed.
Findlay has also appeared in shows such as How to Get Away With Murder, The Carrie Diaries, and the first season of AMC's The Killing. Coming up, you can catch Findlay in Jordan Peele [4]'s anthology series The Twilight [5] Zone.
Harry Shum Jr. as Brendan Winter
Best known for playing the sexy dancing Mike Chang on Glee, Harry Shum Jr. will costar in the series as Sydney's self-absorbed brother Brendan Winter, a world traveller who funds his luxury lifestyle with his father's money. As well as a Glee alum, Shum currently plays warlock Magnus Bane in Shadowhunters (which is in its third and final season) and briefly appeared in the Crazy Rich Asians midcredits scene (which suggests that his unnamed character will make a reappearance in the sequel [6]).
Dave Annable as Wesley "Wes" Reid
Best known for playing Justin Walker on the ABC family drama Brothers & Sisters, Dave Annable is confirmed to appear in the series as Wesley "Wes" Reid [7], the brother in one of the two sets of adult siblings who discover each other late in life. Past roles for Annable include Henry Martin on ABC's supernatural drama 666 Park Avenue and Pierce Harrison on NBC's short-lived medical drama Heartbeat.
