9 Horror Movies Everyone Will Be Talking About in 2019

If you like to bounce back from all the holiday cheer with a little bit of horror [1], the first few months of 2019 have plenty of scares to keep you jumping in your seat. Some are straight-up horror movies, while others are the type of psychological thriller that may stay with you for days afterward. Midsommar

In this freaky American-Swedish horror film directed by Hereditary's Ari Aster, a couple vacationing in an idyllic-seeming Swedish village find themselves feeling increasingly uneasy as cult-like behavior becomes noticeable among the townspeople. If you missed it in theaters, check out the trailer [3] to see how quickly the vacation goes awry when animal carcasses and blood smears start to appear.

Ma

What could be better than a middle-aged woman who lets teenagers throw parties at her house (especially when that woman is Octavia Spencer)? But like most things, if it sounds too good to be true, then it usually is, and you better believe that Sue Ann's hospitality takes a weird turn. Tate Taylor (who previously worked with Spencer for The Help) directed, and the trailer [4] alone might just give you nightmares.

IT: Chapter Two

After the IT [5] remake took horror fans by storm in 2017, hold on to your hats for the sequel because it is apparently going to be even scarier than its predecessor. Not only can the writers up the ante because they're now using adult actors instead of kids, but there is also a Pennywise origin story that star Bill Skarsgard called "really, really disturbing" on Variety's Playback podcast. Happy Death Day 2U

This sequel to the 2017 surprise hit Happy Death Day [7] sees Theresa "Tree" Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) re-entering the time loop to figure out why she ever ended up there in the first place. Once there, she must deal with Lori (Ruby Modine), who is hellbent on revenge.

Escape Room

If you've ever done an escape room, you know how claustrophobic and urgent it can feel. Toss in some Saw-like booby traps and a sadistic mastermind and you've got yourself a slam-bang horror movie. Daredevil's [8] Deborah Ann Woll and New Amsterdam's Tyler Labine costar.

Child's Play

Chucky's back! Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) are starring in the reboot of the terrifying horror classic. The plot sounds similar to the 1988 original [9], which follows a single mother, her son, and their new killer doll. Wanna play?

The Prodigy

In the proud tradition of terrifying-child films like The Bad Seed, Children of the Corn, The Exorcist and The Omen, meet The Prodigy, about a young boy (Jackson Robert Scott) whose mother (Orange Is the New Black [10] star Taylor Schilling) grows concerned about his disturbing behaviour and wonders if there is something supernatural (and possibly evil) afoot.

Captive State

This sci-fi thriller looks at the lives of a group of people in one Chicago neighbourhood 10 years after an alien invasion. It stars John Goodman, Vera Farmiga, D.B. Sweeney, Alan Ruck, and Machine Gun Kelly, who sustained a sternum fracture [11] on set while filming a fight scene.

Serenity

Matthew McConaughey [12] stars as fishing boat captain Baker whose ex-wife Karen (Anne Hathaway [13]) tracks him down with a desperate plea for help — but is she everything she seems to be? Since this looks like a taut thriller, we're going to guess that the answer is "no." Diane Lane [14] co-stars as Baker's new lover and Jason Clarke plays Karen's new husband.
