Here's Where We Left Every Character at the End of the First Season of Succession

31/07/2019 - 05:50 PM

The Emmy-nominated Succession [1] returns to HBO for season two on Sunday, Aug. 11. The series is basically the dramatic version of Arrested Development (sans banana stand), following the Roy family and who will succeed when patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) either retires or dies – whichever comes first. Even though his health is failing, after suffering a stroke during his 80th birthday celebration, Logan still has a death grip on his company and is reluctant to let his second-eldest son Kendall (Jeremy Strong) or anyone else take the reins. Want to catch up before

the season two premiere [2]? Here's what happened to every character in the season one finale.

Shiv Roy

Shiv (Sarah Snook) marries Tom (Matthew Macfadyen), despite her mother spreading doubt during the rehearsal dinner by asking partygoers, "So how long do you give it?" What complicates matters is that Shiv's side piece and work colleague Nate (Ashley Zukerman) is also in attendance at the wedding, and Tom finally realises that they are more than just work buddies.

Tom

Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) learns that Shiv (Sarah Snook) had an affair with Nate (Ashley Zukerman) and that Shiv doesn't really believe in a monogamous marriage. Tom receives permission from his new wife to ask Nate to leave the wedding: "If I ever see you in the same room as Shiv again, I will pay men to break your legs. And if I go to jail — which I won't — so be it."

Connor Roy

All season, Connor (Alan Ruck) has been trying to convince everyone that he and his possible-call-girl girlfriend Willa (Justine Lupe) are legit and in love. So he gets pretty miffed when they refuse to put her in the family wedding photo. He also gets upset when Willa claims he doesn't actually do anything, which causes him to decide he's going to run for president.

Roman Roy

Eager to show his father and his family that he's not a screw-up, Roman (Kieran Culkin) moves up the shuttle launch he's in charge of to coincide with Shiv's wedding day. However, it blows up in his face — literally while streaming on his phone. In a subtly disturbing scene following the explosion, he collects himself in the bathroom, literally washing his hands of it.

Greg

Greg (Nicholas Braun [3]) started the season puking through a mascot mask, and now he's really come up in the world by (sort of) helping Tom hide the sexual assault allegations against the company cruise lines. "Anybody would be wise to keep me in a good role," he tells Kendall.

Stewy Hosseini

Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and his old college buddy Stewy (Arian Moyaed) have been working on a company takeover. Stewy tells Kendall that they need to do the "bear hug" Waystar Royco takeover over Shiv's wedding weekend (as awkward as that might be), because otherwise, it's going to be leaked to the public.

Logan Roy

Initially, Logan (Brian Cox) and his third wife Marcia (Hiam Abbass) decline attending daughter Shiv's (Sarah Snook) wedding, over family and political manners. But at the last second, they decide to attend. At the wedding, son Kendall (Jeremy Strong) decides to "bear hug" Logan and launch a takeover of the company. However, things don't go as planned.

Kendall Roy

Kendall (Jeremy Strong) goes through with the "bear hug" company takeover on his father and hands him the walking papers while Daddy is in the bathroom. In celebration, Kendall goes on a drug and alcohol binge at the wedding, and when he drives with a waiter to get more drugs, they are in a car accident, leaving the waiter dead. Logan finds out about this, and in exchange for killing the "bear hug," agrees to cover up the death and welcome Kendall back to Waystar Royco.
