It's a rule that you need to stick around when the credits roll during superhero movies, not only to pay respects to the hardworking cast and crew, but also to catch any bonus scenes. Like its fellow DCEU films Justice League and Aquaman, Shazam! definitely follows this long-standing tradition. It delivers not one, but two post-credits scenes to reward those who sit in their seats patiently even after the feature.
Basically, the mid-credits scene is an important puzzle piece that strongly suggests the possibility of a sequel. On the other hand, the post-credits scene that follows it is just plain fun. Below, we'll break down what you need to know about the two post-credits scenes in Shazam! and briefly touch upon how they fit into the DCEU. Prepare for spoilers ahead, obviously!
The Mid-Credits Scene
The movie ends with Shazam defeating Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), the supervillain who's obsessed with wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) and superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi). Not long after the credits roll, we see the evil scientist locked up in solitary confinement after Billy (Asher Angel) decides to spare his life. Desperate to get back to the magical lair to re-access the powers of the Seven Deadly Sins, he scribbles hieroglyphs all over the walls of his cell. Well, it doesn't work, suffice to say.
Just on the brink of insanity, Sivana hears a voice coming from an air duct. It's a creepy and crawly caterpillar creature, previously seen in a glass container in the Rock of Eternity. We know, it's hard to take seriously, but it's pretty important world-building. The creature, known in the Shazam! series as "Mister Mind," proposes to help Sivana. In the comics, the two of them work together with the Monster Society of Evil. Black Adam is a part of that group, and he just so happens to be getting his own solo DC movie with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson playing him. If not a sequel, we're sensing a crossover coming up very soon.
The Post-Credits Scene
Following all of the credits is the last bonus scene, which is mostly just there for the sake of fun. Freddy (aka baby Seth Cohen) continues trying to figure out the scope of Billy's powers. They both learn that Shazam isn't able to communicate with fish and won't be able to "command an army of billions in the sea." Shazam doesn't think it's that cool of a power. Yeah, this one is a bit of a burn towards Aquaman, but all in good fun!
Take your time to really savor these extra scenes; it'll be a minute before the DCEU rolls out with Wonder Woman 1984 and the Harley Quinn-centric Birds of Prey!
