If you're one of the many cat lovers [1] who hit up a movie theatre this weekend to watch Captain Marvel [2], then congratulations — you helped Carol Danvers (aka Brie Larson) land the biggest-ever opening for a female-fronted film, according to The Hollywood Reporter [3]. The newest superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe [4] officially came out on Friday, March 8 (though late showings began the evening before, on March 7), and has since earned an estimated $153 million for its debut weekend in North America, in addition to an estimated $455 million globally. Now that's something to purr about, eh Goose [5]?

The last time a female-fronted superhero film came even close to being this lucrative was 2017's Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot, which raked in $103 million combined in America and Canada during its opening weekend. As far as films in general with a female lead, Disney's Beauty and the Beast reboot earned $357 million globally in 2017. Captain Marvel now has the distinction of not only scoring the biggest worldwide opening of all time for a female-fronted film, but also the seventh-biggest debut for the MCU (behind the record-breaking Black Panther [6], Captain America: Civil War, and Iron Man 3, not adjusted for inflation).

So, in other words: keep the popcorn coming [7], Brie Larson.
