Don't Mess With the Parrs: Incredibles 2 Is Already Smashing Box Office Records

SUPER FAMILY -- In Disney Pixar's

Incredibles 2 [1] is having a super run at the box office. The long-awaited sequel to Pixar's The Incredibles finally came out on June 15 and dominated the box office without a backward glance. Which absolutely no one is surprised by, because we didn't wait 14 years just to let it flop.

It has shattered box office records with its opening weekend debut alone, now holding the record for the highest opening weekend [2] for an animated film. The family-friendly film [3] made $70 million on its Friday debut — which matches The Incredibles' total opening weekend — before going up to $180 million total at the domestic box office over the weekend. It beat previous animation record-holder Finding Dory, which was also a Pixar sequel and made $135 million in its opening weekend.

Industry analysts expected the film to come in with a $120 million to $140 million debut [4], and audiences proved that was a vast underestimation. It's also no shock that adults made up 31 percent [5] of the audience, families accounted for 57 percent, and teens made up 11 percent. Though Incredibles 2 has fans of all ages, it's obvious that millennials were pretty excited [6] about the film's release, after waiting 14 years for a sequel.

Incredibles 2 also had the best domestic debut for a non-Marvel Studios superhero movie [7], which we all know is quite a feat, and the second biggest June debut ever [8] behind Jurassic World, which released with $208.8 million in 2015. The film has only been out a few days and is still slowly rolling out internationally, so there is plenty of time for it to break more records as time goes by!
