J.K. Rowling Is Facing Backlash For Details She Just Revealed About 2 Harry Potter Characters

18/03/2019 - 11:54 PM

J.K. Rowling [1] is used to revealing retrospective details about Harry Potter [2] characters to fans on social media, but her latest disclosure is currently drawing backlash. During an interview that was featured on the Blu-ray edition of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the author spoke about the connection between the characters of Dumbledore and Grindelwald, revealing there may have been a "sexual dimension" to their relationship [3].

"Their relationship was incredibly intense. It was passionate, and it was a love relationship," she said. "But as happens in any relationship, gay or straight or whatever label we want to put on it, one never knows really what the other person is feeling. You can't know, you can believe you know." Rowling added that she was "less interested in the sexual side . . . than I am in the sense of the emotions they felt for each other, which ultimately is the most fascinating thing about all human relationship."

This isn't the first time Rowling has angered fans with attempts to prove the series was diverse. On several occasions, the author has revealed unknown details about Harry Potter characters, though many of them — whether they be about the race or sexuality of said characters — haven't been represented in her books or films.

With this in mind, fans were quick to call out Rowling on Twitter, accusing her of queerbaiting and trying to make her books appear to be progressive way after the fact. One user wrote [4], "J.K. Rowling Confirms Some Characters in Her Books and Movies Are Gay Everywhere Except in the Books or the Movies," while another accused Rowling of purposely leaving out the narratives of LGBTQ+ characters so the books can remain "family friendly." [5]

Rowling has yet to comment on or respond to the backlash. Read ahead to see more of what Twitter had to say about her interview.
