NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 05: Janet Mock attends FX Network's

The 2019 Emmy Award nominations [1] have a lot of heavy-hitters on the list, including a record 32 nominations [2] for HBO's final season of Game of Thrones [3]. But the fantasy epic isn't the only series making history with its nominations: Pose [4], FX's groundbreaking series about the New York City ballroom community, scored six nominations including Outstanding Drama Series (which will see it facing off against GoT). The nomination means that Janet Mock, who serves as the series' writer, director, and producer, [5] is the first black transgender producer to ever be nominated in the outstanding drama series race.

Mock celebrated the series' nominations with a post on her Instagram page [6], writing, "I hope the spotlight of this nomination burns bright on our industry's urgent need for more inclusive storytelling, where those who lived it are empowered to tell their own stories."

This isn't the first accolade for the dazzling series since it made history with its premiere in 2018 [7]. It was nominated for best drama series at the 2019 Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Television Awards, while Billy Porter was nominated at both awards shows for his portrayal of Pray Tell. Pose has also received a GLAAD Media Award and was among the entertainment honourees at the 2018 Peabody Awards. And with this round of Emmy nominations, the ballroom culture drama is bringing Porter even closer to achieving mythical EGOT status: he already has a Tony for best lead actor and a best musical theatre Grammy for Kinky Boots. Whew, the category is: fingers crossed!
