Breakups are never easy [1], but Katy Perry [2]'s new song, "Small Talk," might help ease the pain. On Aug. 9, the singer dropped the tune for all the exes [3] and pop-lovers of the world to sing at the top of their lungs [4]. The track — a follow-up to her May single "Never Really Over [5]" — tells the story of two lovers who decide to call it quits on their romance. Their dynamic suddenly changes as they reflect on what they used to be (intimate, fun, fantastical) versus how they are after splitting (distant, dull, awkward). "I just can't believe we went from strangers to lovers to strangers in a lifetime," Perry croons.
Shortly before song's release, Perry teased snippets of it on Instagram. She also posted the cover photo for the single: a bright, '70s-esque snapshot of her surrounded by colourful flowers as she points to the title "Small Talk." It makes sense that the artwork is so groovy considering the song is precisely that. Watch the lyric video for the tune above!
