Lilly Singh Officially Becomes the Only Female Late-Night Host on a Major TV Network

In a special announcement on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, Canadian YouTube comedian Lilly Singh revealed that she will be hosting her own show on NBC called A Little Late With Lilly Singh! It's about time network TV made room for a new late-night host, no?

"Ya girl is getting her own NBC late-night show!" Singh announced, officially making her the only female late-night host on a major television network. Singh will add some much-needed diversity to the late-night television community as an Indian woman, as well as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

When asked what the new show will be like, Singh jokingly told Fallon it will be "kind of like my YouTube channel, but just, you know, now I have more than three staff members." Singh — also known by her loyal YouTube community as Superwoman — joined the video platform in 2010 and has since amassed over 14 million subscribers — a following most first-time late-night hosts could only dream of having. "I'm so excited because I truly get to create a show from scratch," Singh told Fallon. "I get to make it inclusive, I get to create comedy segments, and interview people, and really create something that I believe in, and I'm so honoured and humbled, truly."

Singh also took the time during her interview with Fallon to thank all the female late-night hosts who came before her, like NBC's Cynthia Garrett of Later With Cynthia Garrett, Busy Philipps of Busy Tonight on E!, and Samantha Bee of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee on TBS. "I gotta just say a huge shout-out to all the women who've been before me and are currently in the space, because I couldn't have done it without them paving the path," Singh said. She will also join Daily Show host Trevor Noah as one of only two people of colour currently hosting television talk shows.

In a tweet about the obstacles she's faced as an LGBTQ+ woman of colour, Singh wrote, "Throughout my life these have proven to be obstacles from time to time. But now I'm fully embracing them as my superpowers." Singh is also the author of New York Times Best Seller How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life and has been an inspiration for thousands of young people, earning her four Streamy Awards, two Teen Choice Awards, and a People's Choice Award. Impressive!

To welcome her to the "NBC late-night family," Seth Meyers appeared at the end of Singh's interview with three glasses of champagne to celebrate. We're looking forward to seeing Singh join the lineup of late-night hosts. A Little Late With Lilly Singh will take over the spot previously occupied by Last Call with Carson Daly, and will follow Late Night With Seth Meyers. See the full announcement above.
