AC-12 Is Back! Here's Everything We Know So Far About Line of Duty Season 5

19/03/2019 - 11:15 AM

We're gearing up for season 5 of Line of Duty [1], one of our top must-see British TV shows [2], which will be gracing our TV screens very soon. To help with the wait, we've rounded up everything we know so far about the latest season. Get reacquainted with the series regulars that are returning, get the lowdown on the new cast members that are joining the gang — including who's been confirmed as the infamous "Balaclava Man" — and get the inside track from the series creator on what we can expect from the plot this time round. Read on to find out when the show is set to return, and to watch the teaser trailer and full-blown trailer, too.

The New Cast Members

As is the tradition with Line of Duty, there will be new featured stars in season five. This is England star Stephen Graham is "Balaclava Man" John Corbett, and Rochenda Sandall is Lisa McQueen. What do we know about them so far? [4]

Well, they're "two pivotal figures in a deadly organised crime group". These two are "known to have links with corrupt police offers and [are] suspected to be under direct command of the shadowy figure known only as 'H'".

Joining these new faces are Taj Atwal from In the Club as PC Tatleen Sohota, and Richard Pepple from Motherland as PS Kyle Ferringham. Bohemian Rhapsody's Ace Bhatti, Doctor Foster's Elizabeth Rider, Susan Vidler Shetland's, and Hidden's Sian Reese-Williams will also be playing new, as yet unnamed characters.

The Returning Cast

The core trio of Adrian Dunbar (Supt. Ted Hastings), Vicky McClure (DS Kate Fleming), and Martin Compston (DS Steve Arnott) are all reprising their roles as officers of AC-12.

Other familiar faces returning include Maya Sondhi as PC Maneet Bindra, Polly Walker as Gill Biggeloe, Aiysha Hart as DS Sam Railston, Tony Pitts as Det. Ch. Supt. Les Hargreaves, and Andrew Irvine as Robin Hastings.

The Plot

An "explosive chain of events" leads to Corbett and McQueen becoming persons of interest to AC-12. We don't know what those events are just yet, but season four ended [5] with our three key officers of AC-12 viewing a huge collection of evidence that pieced together the previous seasons' events so far, all linked by a balaclava-clad criminal gang.

The network of "bent coppers" is even bigger than anyone thought possible, and the level of police corruption goes even deeper than they ever imagined.

We can expect to learn more about the regulars, too, as series creator Jed Mercurio told the BBC [6] he wanted to "look at the personal lives of all the regulars in series five" — particularly as they took a "backseat" to Roz Huntley in season four.

The Teaser Trailer

The teaser trailer that was released in Sept. 2018 got us excited . . .

The Trailer

. . . the minute-long trailer dropped on March 3, giving us more insight into what to expect.

The Air Date

The new series will hit BBC One at 9 p.m. on Sunday March 31. Ahead of the new series, the BBC has added seasons on to four to iPlayer [7], and they're also available on Netflix [8].

Season six has already been commissioned, with Jed Mercurio saying [9] they'll be shooting that "in the next couple of years", so we've got that to look forward to, too.
