Is there any song that Mackenzie can't make sound amazing [1]?! The talented singer hit the America's Got Talent [2] stage for the second time on Tuesday night, where he belted out Journey's emotional ballad "Faithfully." Unsurprisingly, the entire audience sprang to their feet when he finished singing his final, gorgeous note, and all five judges gave him a standing ovation. "The joy with which you sang that song is undeniable," guest judge Ellie Kemper told him. "It was raw, and it was you, and I loved it!"
Unfortunately not every judge was as over the moon about his performance — Julianne Hough noted that although his talent is undeniable, this felt "pushed" when compared to the "effortless" way he sang Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" during his audition. Luckily Simon Cowell [3] came to Mackenzie's defence.
"How can you criticize that? It's amazing!" the notoriously harsh judge said to the competitor. "There's obviously been a bumpy road to get to where you are, right? I felt everything came from you. It wasn't a backing track, it was a song that was personal to you."
