If you found yourself worshiping at the altar of Angelina Jolie in 2014's Maleficent [1], we have excellent news. A sequel is on the way! While murmurs of a follow-up film have been permeating throughout Hollywood for quite some time, Disney confirmed that the film was moving [2] full speed ahead in late May. In the time since, plenty of exciting details about the new project have trickled out. Now, we have a loose story, a whole bunch of exciting new cast members, and even a release date! We can't wait for the drama to unfold on screen again. Those wings! Those horns! Those cheekbones! Check out everything we were able to dredge up about Maleficent 2 thus far.
The Story
According to Entertainment Weekly, the second go 'round will focus on Maleficent and Aurora. The two will "form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within." Interesting.
The Cast
Tons of stars, old and new, have been confirmed for the sequel. Of course, Jolie and Fanning will reprise their roles as Maleficent and Aurora. Pfeiffer will play a character known as Queen Ingrith, while Harris Dickinson joins as Prince Phillip [6] in replacement of the original film's heartthrob, Brenton Thwaites. Other additions include Judith Shekoni [7], Fantastic Beasts' Jenn Murray [8], and Ed Skrein.
The Director
The film has locked in Joachim Ronning, best known for codirecting Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
The Release Date
In June 2018, Disney confirmed that the sequel would be released [9] on May 29, 2020.
