From Iron Man to Infinity War, See How Much the Avengers Have Changed Over the Years

04/05/2018 - 11:21 PM

It's hard to believe that the Marvel Cinematic Universe [1] (MCU) began 10 years ago and has spawned 19 films (and that's just so far [2]). From 2008's Iron Man to 2018's Avengers: Infinity War [3], we've met superheroes and villains galore, forgiven some antiheroes, and mourned fictional loved ones as if they were our own. What began with Tony Stark confessing, "I am Iron Man," has become something truly epic. We've watched our heroes evolve from their origin story to form the collective that we know as the Avengers, so in celebration of 10 years of awesomeness, let's take a trip down memory lane and see how our beloved Marvel characters have changed from their first movies to now. Avengers assemble!

Tony Stark/Iron Man

In Iron Man, Tony Stark gets the ball rolling. He wins us over with his snarkiness and bad-boy charm.

By Iron Man 2, Tony has upped the snark to 10 while trying to keep his tech out of the government's hands.

In The Avengers, Tony reminds us that he's a big man in a suit who is also a "genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist." In case you forgot.

Iron Man 3 shows us the many fractures in Tony's armor that have nothing to do with his tech.

Avengers: Age of Ultron has Tony Stark looking super fine even though he's still 100 percent stressed and feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Tony Stark is just trying to make things right in Captain America: Civil War.

In Spider-man: Homecoming, Tony's like the filthy-rich estranged mentor Peter never knew he needed.

Avengers: Infinity War brings Tony out of his self-imposed "retirement."

Tony upgrades the suit just in time for the big, bad Thanos in Infinity War.

James "Rhodey" Rhodes

Iron Man introduces us to Terrence Howard's James "Rhodey" Rhodes. Hope you didn't get attached to this face!

There's the Rhodey we know and love in Iron Man 2, played by Don Cheadle [4].

Tony and Rhodedy put their bromance into serious action as Iron Man and War Machine in Iron Man 2.

Rhodes wants to help, but he has things to do in Iron Man 3.

Rhodey looks very dapper in a suit and tie in Age of Ultron.

Rhodey ends up paying a serious price in Civil War.

Rhodey reunited with old friends in Infinity War!

Pepper Potts

We meet Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow [5]), Tony's personal assistant and honestly the best thing that's ever happened to him, in Iron Man.

Pepper Potts deals with Tony's shenanigans looking as flawless as always in Iron Man 2.

This is Pepper's face throughout Iron Man 3. Stressed but fabulous.

Happy Hogan

It's Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau [6]), the most loyal bodyguard and chauffeur you could ask for, looking extremely young in Iron Man.

Happy in Iron Man 2, coming through when Tony needs him as usual!

Like everyone else in Iron Man 3, Happy's giving us all the stressed vibes.

Happy is basically babysitting his boss's kid in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and he does his best!

Bruce Banner/The Hulk

The Incredible Hulk introduces us to Bruce Banner! This isn't the face that we're used to (aka Edward Norton [7]'s face), but it's still adorably nerdy.

Our first impression of the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk? Definitely a mean, green rage machine.

MCU Bruce Banner 2.0 in The Avengers! Despite being played by Mark Ruffalo [8] this time around, he's still adorably stressed.

Hey there, Big Guy! He's still mean and green in The Avengers, just how we like him.

Bruce Banner in Age of Ultron, somehow managing to look even more adorably nerdy and stressed than he did last time.

In Age of Ultron, Hulk learns that secretive redheads can hurt you with more than just a punch.

In Thor: Ragnarok, Bruce is just along for the ride.

Understandably, because in Ragnarok, he's been the Hulk for a long time and has no memory of it.

Bruce is ready to get his hands dirty in a whole new way in Infinity War.

The Hulk makes a brief but memorable appearance in Infinity War.

Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow

In Iron Man 2, we get our first introduction to the S.H.I.E.L.D. spy with a big heart, Natasha Romanoff, codename: Black Widow.

Black Widow teaches us that an alien invasion doesn't mean you can be fabulous in The Avengers.

Natasha, looking gorgeous and full of secrets as usual in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Captain America and Black Widow make a seriously badass duo in The Winter Soldier.

Natasha in Age of Ultron, probably wondering how she lets everyone get her into these situations.

Black Widow really just wanted everyone to get it together in Captain America: Civil War.

Infinity War showed us a Black Widow with a new 'do and the same 'tude.

Nick Fury

Nick Fury always manages to look like he knows more than everyone else, especially in Iron Man 2. Probably because he does.

The Avengers gave us Nick Fury in full S.H.I.E.L.D. director mode.

In The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury continues to be 10,000 percent tired of these games.

Thor Odinson

In Thor, we meet Thor Odinson, Prince of Asgard and kind of a spoiled brat. He gets over it, though!

The Prince of Asgard looking very rock 'n' roll at S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ during The Avengers.

Thor is trying to fix his home in Thor: The Dark World, but things are a little more complicated than he thought.

Thor continues to weaken knees and kick ass in Age of Ultron.

Ragnarok takes our hero for a ride. At first, he was having a bit of a time.

Then he gets a haircut and it's pretty much only uphill from there!

In Infinity War, Thor is finally recognized as the offspring of a pirate and an angel. (#TeamEyePatch)

Loki Odinson (Laufeyson)

Thor introduces Loki Odinson, a Prince of Asgard suffering from serious daddy issues. He does not get over it.

Loki upgrades from petty little brother to big bad in The Avengers.

The Dark World marks the first time Loki fakes his death.

It's cool, Loki's a good guy in Ragnarok. In the end, anyway.

Steve Rogers/Captain America

This is preserum Steven Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger and he is exactly as fierce as he looks.

This is postserum Steven Rogers in The First Avenger. You're welcome.

Steve Rogers and James Barnes

Captain America in full gear and his best buddy, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, in The First Avenger.

Captain America pulls the classic superhero pose when saving New York City in The Avengers.

Steve Rogers is stressed, but still saving the day in The Winter Soldier.

Honestly, who doesn't love watching Steve in action in Age of Ultron?

Steve is really just doing his best in Civil War.

A beard and a new uniform do Steve a world of good in Infinity War.

James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes/Winter Soldier:

The First Avenger introduces us to Steve's best friend, Bucky Barnes.

Bucky is sporting a bit of a new look in The Winter Soldier.

Spoilers: he's the Winter Soldier! But also not really the bad guy.

Seriously, all Bucky wants in Captain America: Civil War is to be left alone with his plums and his books.

Bucky spends a little time in Wakanda, and by Infinity War, he's sporting a new arm and a freshly blown-out 'do.

Sam Wilson/Falcon

We meet Sam Wilson, former pararescueman and literal ray of snarky sunshine, in The Winter Soldier.

In The Winter Soldier, he reveals that he's a badass superhero in his own right! Codename: Falcon.

Sam is always willing to fight for what's right, especially in Captain America: Civil War.

In Infinity War, Sam is right by Steve's side. Until he isn't . . .

Clint Barton/Hawkeye

We meet the one guy who has it a little harder than the rest in The Avengers, Hawkeye.

In Age of Ultron, Hawkeye is always ready with an arrow or a witty quip.

Civil War brings Hawkeye out of retirement to fight on Team Cap.

Maria Hill

The Avengers introduces Maria Hill, S.H.I.E.L.D. lieutenant and all-around badass.

Maria is only about 97 percent tired of these games in The Winter Soldier.

Maria Hill looks like she never catches a break but is still ready to lead the charge in Age of Ultron.

Peter Quill/Star-Lord

Guardians of the Galaxy introduces us to Peter Quill, aka Star-lord. He's from Missouri and has great taste in music.

Peter is getting the hang of this captain thing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

We meet Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. She has an incredibly tragic backstory but is amazing with daggers, so win-win?

Gamora is still dangerously gorgeous in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

In Infinity War, Gamora ends up in a nightmare of a family reunion.

Rocket Raccoon

In Guardians of the Galaxy, we meet Rocket Raccoon! He also has a tragic backstory that led to his slightly scary love for firearms.

Rocket tries to be the voice of self-preservation in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Like everyone else, Rocket is understandably impressed with Thor's manliness in Infinity War.

Groot

We meet Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. The best damn sentient tree there ever was. RIP.

Baby Groot

Speaking of Groot, we meet Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Groot's son. [9]

By Infinity War, Groot is a foul-mouthed teenager. Even sentient trees go through a surly adolescent phase.

Drax the Destroyer

In Guardians of the Galaxy, Drax the Destroyer is only out for revenge, but he finds a home with the Guardians.

Drax finds a new friend to torture Quill with in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Drax is his usual disturbing yet hilariously blunt self in Infinity War.

Nebula

OK, so Nebula isn't really a Guardian, but she's not all bad, just upset with the world in Guardians of the Galaxy, understandably.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Nebula tries really hard to be the bad guy, but she's all right in the end.

We see just how much Nebula cares about her sister in Infinity War.

Mantis

Mantis makes her intro in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and wins us over immediately.

Mantis meets some new friends in Infinity War and shows off her unique skill set again the Big Bad.

Vision

This is Vision! He's an android with a metaphorically big heart that we meet in Age of Ultron.

Vision just wants everyone to get along in Civil War. Please, guys?

Vision's new romance gets threatened in Infinity War.

Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver

Age of Ultron introduces Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. They're troubled twins who had a hard time growing up and are still having a hard time, to be honest.

Wanda is learning about her powers and feeling a little stressed by everything in Civil War.

Have you noticed Wanda is super powerful? She shows off a little in Infinity War, and we like it.

Scott Lang/Ant-Man

Scott Lang is obviously a master thief in Ant-Man because he's stolen our hearts.

He makes a shrinking suit look good!

Scott still manages to be dopey yet adorable in Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Did someone order a supersize Ant-Man?

Hope Pym/The Wasp

Hope Pym doesn't have her suit in Ant-Man, but she can still kick your ass.

Hope gears up in Ant-Man and the Wasp and we are HERE for it!

T'Challa/Black Panther

We meet T'Challa, king of Wakanda and the Black Panther [10], in Civil War. He's here for revenge, not really interested in this dysfunctional superfriend drama.

We see T'Challa in his full element as the King of Wakanda in Black Panther [11].

He's kicking ass on levels we haven't even thought of yet.

In Infinity War, T'Challa leads the Wakandan army to fight for the safety of the universe.

Shuri

We also meet T'Challa's little sister, Shuri, in Black Panther [12]. She's inventing things to kick ass and fixing your broken white boys.

Shuri gets to show off her skills and works to help the Avengers in Infinity War.

Okoye

Okoye blesses our screens in Black Panther [13], and we're honestly better for it. She never freezes.

The general of the Dora Milaje continues to kick all the ass in Infinity War.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man

Civil War introduces our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! He's a little outside his jurisdiction, but eager to lend a helping hand.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter is juggling a lot. He's just doing his best, guys.

Peter makes everyone around him feel 100 years older with his pop culture references in Infinity War.

How amazing is Peter's new suit in Infinity War?!

Doctor Strange

In Doctor Strange, we meet Dr. Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon whose life is about to get weird.

Doctor Strange, a master of the mystic arts, switches it up with his incredibly snazzy cloak.

Doctor Strange meets the Avengers in Infinity War and has a hard time playing well with others at first.

Thanos/Mad Titan

We first meet Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy, and we can tell he's a superchill dad right away.

Thanos has had a little work done by Infinity War, and he's just here to a good time while killing half the universe.
