You Need to Hear Kumail Nanjiani's Poignant Thoughts on Representation in This Oscars Montage

05/03/2018 - 02:50 PM

In addition to celebrities wearing Time's Up pins on the Oscars red carpet, the Academy made sure to devote time during the show to the important movement [1] with an important montage that also touched on race and representation in the film industry. "All the movies I loved were directed by men. That seemed like a prerequisite," best director nominee Greta Gerwig [2] said before encouraging future filmmakers. "Go make your movie. We need your movie. I need your movie."

One of the more poignant moments in the montage, which also featured the likes of Ava DuVernay [3] and Salma Hayek [4], was when The Big Sick's Kumail Nanjiani spoke about the importance of seeing diversity onscreen. "Some of my favourite movies are movies by straight white dudes about straight white dudes," the best original screenplay nominee said. "Now straight white dudes can watch movies starring me, and you relate to that. It's not that hard, I've done it my whole life."
