11 Movies That Would Make a Perfect Double Feature With Mean Girls

10/04/2018 - 06:31 PM

"So you agree? You think you're really pretty?"

From the hilarious one-liners people still quote almost 15 years later to the all-star cast and the juicy plot, Mean Girls [1] has earned its place in movie history as a classic high school film [2] that everybody should see. And while there aren't any other movies quite like it, there are some that come close to the iconic film.

We've pulled together some of our faves for you to choose from so you can spend your weekend reliving all the drama of high school. Because, who doesn't love some good drama?

Clueless

Like Mean Girls [3], Clueless hilariously chronicles the tales of an "in" crowd as they navigate their way through the drama that high school brings (boy drama, friend drama . . . the usual). With quotables as memorable as those from Mean Girls and a wardrobe so iconic people still dress up as the Clueless girls every Halloween [4], you'll want to watch this classic.

Easy A

Not only would we grade Easy A an easy A, it's arguably one of Emma Stone [5]'s best films. It's also similar to Mean Girls [6] in a few ways. A once-upon-a-time outsider experiences instant popularity and earns the ranks of royalty at her high school. Some welcome it. Some express disdain with glaring eyes and judgment. But like Cady Heron, regardless of how people see her, Olive Penderghast eventually decides to use this newfound fame to disrupt the status quo and challenge the hierarchies of high school. 10/10 recommend.

Freaky Friday

A remake of the 1976 movie, this Lindsay Lohan [7] and Jamie Lee Curtis film is a must-see. When mother and daughter wake up in each other's bodies, their worlds are turned upside down. While it's an adjustment (to say the least), this freak accident brings them closer than ever before, as they literally get the chance to walk in each other's shoes. Like Mean Girls [8], it's a great movie about taking a step back and understanding where your high school experiences fall in the grander scheme of things.

Heathers

Four high school girls. All popular. All mean. Sounds familiar, right? Believe it or not, we're not talking about Mean Girls [9]. Instead, we're talking about the 1988 classic Heathers, a film many would argue is the original Mean Girls. If you are looking for a movie to remind you of the group of girls who used to tease you in high school, this is it.

Sixteen Candles

Sophomore student Samantha (Molly Ringwald) has the 16th birthday she'll always remember, despite the fact that her family completely forgot. In many ways it's your typical teen rom-com, but it's oh-so worth it! If you love Mean Girls [10], we can bet you'll love this classic as well.

Odd Girl Out

Lies, manipulation, and messiness are a big part of Lifetime's 2005 movie Odd Girl Out. The drama, starring Alexa Vega, is inspired by the book Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls by Rachel Simmons. Mean Girls [11] was inspired by a book as well, Rosalind Wiseman's Queen Bees and Wannabes.

She's the Man

This film showcases Amanda Bynes [12] in her prime. She stars as Viola Hastings, a badass teen who steps outside of her comfort zone and pretends to be her brother Sebastian while attending a prestigious boarding school. It's a modern take on Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, though you may forget that when faced with Channing Tatum [13]'s bare abs.

Outcasts

Like Cady in Mean Girls [14], the group of outsiders in the 2017 film Outcasts decides to overthrow the popular group in power at their local high school. It's funny, clever, and a representation of the bravery many of us wish we had in our teens.

10 Things I Hate About You

Who doesn't love a classic '90s romance movie? In 10 Things I Hate About You [15], Julia Stiles acts alongside the late heartthrob Heath Ledger [16] as one teenage outcast who falls for another. While high school is surely a popularity contest, these two want no parts of it, and eventually realize they're perfect for each other. Like Mean Girls [17], it's an iconic teen film, and we highly recommend.

The House Bunny

If you're looking for a movie that will have you cackling from start to finish, we have that for you. The House Bunny is undoubtedly one of Anna Faris [18]'s most hysterical films and one you should certainly see if you're a Mean Girls [19] fan. When former Playboy bunny Shelley gets kicked out of the Playboy mansion, she stumbles upon a group of college misfits whom she decides to transform, as they wreak havoc on the sorority culture at their local campus. Like Mean Girls, these ladies work from within to challenge the status quo.

The Hot Chick

Last but certainly not least, The Hot Chick finds Rachel McAdams [20] in a role strikingly similar to Regina George. She appears as the titular popular girl who, to her utter horror, is transformed into Rob Schneider. Anna Faris [21] also stars in the 2002 comedy, which you need to watch STAT.
