Have you ever wondered what would happen if 12 strangers took part in a mysterious three-day pharmaceutical drug trial that went totally awry? That's the premise of Netflix's highly anticipated original series [1] Maniac [2], set to debut Sept. 21. A dark comedy based on the Norwegian TV show of the same name, the show will centre around two strangers who believe themselves to be living out a fantasy life while they're actually locked up in an institution. Emma Stone
La La Land actress Emma Stone [4] will appear in the show as Annie Landsberg, who participates in a mysterious pharmaceutical trial in the hope of becoming less fixated on her broken relationships with her mother and sister.
Jonah Hill
The Wolf of Wall Street actor Jonah Hill [5] will play Owen Milgrim, the son of wealthy New York industrialists, who has struggled his whole life with potential schizophrenia and who also participates in the trial.
Justin Theroux
Justin Theroux, who played Kevin Garvey in HBO's The Leftovers [6], is set to play the villainous Dr. James K. Mantleray, the scientist in charge of the drug trial and the series' primary antagonist.
Sonoya Mizuno
Best known for playing robot Kyoto in Alex Garland's Ex Machina, Sonoya Mizuno will take on the role of Dr. Fujita, the empathetic assistant of the ruthless Dr. Mantleray.
Sally Field
The legendary Sally Field [7], who has starred in films such as Mrs. Doubtfire and Steel Magnolias, will play Dr. Greta Mantleray, boss of Dr. James K. Mantleray and the head of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech.
Julia Garner
Julia Garner, who plays Ruth Langmore in the Netflix original series Ozark, will appear in the show as Ellie, though it's not yet clear what role her character will play.
Jemima Kirke
Girls actress Jemima Kirke will also have a recurring role in the upcoming series, though it hasn't been revealed who she will play.
