For the People: Where You've Seen the Cast of Your New Shondaland Obsession

There's a new legal drama in town, and it's already shaping up to be a Tuesday night favourite. For The People is Shonda Rhimes [1]'s latest ABC series, and it's set in the high-stakes United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (aka "The Mother Court"). We follow the lives of young lawyers from both sides of the aisle, as prosecutors and public defenders square off to come on top in the court of law. The show is classic Shondaland, blurring the lines between the characters' professions and personal lives.

The cast is a mix of fresh faces and veteran actors; here's who you need to know from For The People!

Britt Robertson

Britt Robertson stars as public defender Sandra Bell, and was previously the star of the short-lived Netflix show Girlboss. She also had roles in Under the Dome, Life Unexpected, Tomorrowland, and The Space Between Us.

Jasmin Savoy Brown

Jasmin Savoy Brown plays Allison Adams, Sandra's best friend and fellow public defender. She was recently on the now-cancelled TNT show Will, and also had roles on The Leftovers and Love. Her film credits include Forgotten Hero and Lane 1974.

Wesam Keesh

Taking on the role of public defender Jay Simmons is Wesam Keesh, who is best known for his role on MTV's Awkward.

Hope Davis

Hope Davis plays Jill Carlan, the federal public defender that oversees the young public defenders. Davis is a film, TV, and theater veteran, and recently starred in TV shows American Crime and Wayward Pines. Her film credits include Captain America: Civil War and Louder Than Words. She also received a Tony nomination for her role in God of Carnage on Broadway!

Susannah Flood

Flood plays call-it-like-it-is prosecutor Kate Littlejohn, and has had roles on Chicago Fire, Law & Order: SVU, and Deadbeat. She also made her Broadway debut in The Cherry Orchard in 2016.

Ben Rappaport

Rappaport plays prosecutor Seth Oliver, and was most recently on Mr. Robot, Younger, Ozark, and two seasons of The Good Wife.

Regé-Jean Page

Regé-Jean Page plays prosecutor Leonard Knox, and will soon appear in the film Mortal Engines. He was recently in the remake of Roots, and was a series regular in the final season of BBC's Waterloo Road.

Ben Shenkman

Ben Shenkman plays Roger Gunn, chief of the criminal division in the U.S. Attorney's Office. Shenkman was recently on Billions and The Night Of, and is best known for his role on Royal Pains and for his Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated performance in Angels in America. He's also a Tony-nominated theater actor, and recently appeared alongside Larry David [2] in David's Broadway play, Fish in the Dark.

Vondie Curtis-Hall

Vondie Curtis-Hall takes on the role of Judge Nicholas Byrne. He's a veteran actor who received an Emmy nomination for his role on ER.

Anna Deavere Smith

Anna Deavere Smith plays the clerk of the court Tina Krissman, and is an accomplished actress, playwright, teacher, and author. She appears on Black-ish [3], and is best known for roles on Nurse Jackie and The West Wing. She also received the National Endowment for the Humanities Medal from President Obama in 2012.
