It's Been Over 10 Years Since Rent Hit Theatres — Here's What the Cast Has Been Up to Since

Rapp originated the role of Mark in the Broadway musical and reprised the role for the 2005 film.

Rapp was already making a name for himself on Broadway when he nabbed the role of Mark in the 1995 off-Broadway cast of Rent. He went on to play Mark on Broadway, a National Tour, and a West End run, as well as reprising the role on film. Rapp has also released a solo CD, a memoir about Rent, and developed a one-man stage show. In 2016, Rapp earned his first regular TV role as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets on Star Trek: Discovery, the first openly gay character in the Star Trek television franchise.

The Broadway star originated the role of Roger and played him again in the film.

Pascal is arguably best known for his work on Broadway, which — after Rent — include originating the role of Radames in Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida, starring in the 1998 revival of Cabaret, and in Memphis. He's appeared in a few films, most notably playing the lead singer of the band No Vacancy in School of Rock. Most recently, he joined the Broadway company of the Tony Award-winning musical Something Rotten!, where he played William Shakespeare in the show's closing cast and first National Tour.

While Martin originated the role of Collins off-Broadway — and went on to play him on Broadway, in West End, and on-screen — he's probably best known for his role as NYPD Detective Edward "Ed" Green on Law & Order. Martin portrayed Det. Ed for over 200 episodes, from 1999-2008. Nowadays, Martin is recognised for his work as Joe West on The CW's The Flash.

The role of Joanne was originally played by Fredi Walker during the Broadway production, but Thoms played the character in the film.

Prior to Rent, Thoms was known for her role as Mahandra McGinty on the short-lived Fox series Wonderfalls. Since then Thoms has appeared in various films, including The Devil Wears Prada and Grindhouse: Death Proof. She's also made a name for herself on TV, joining the casts of Cold Case, Love, UnREAL, and most recently 9-1-1.

Daphne Rubin-Vega originated the role of Mimi Marquez in the off-Broadway musical and Dawson took on the role in the film.

Dawson was already a well-known actress when she took on the role of Mimi in the film adaptation of Rent (for which she won the Satellite Award for best supporting actress), and she hasn't slowed down since. She's starred in Clerks II, A Guide to Recognising Your Saints, Seven Pounds, Top Five, and Unforgettable. She's also voiced a few comic book characters, including Diana Prince / Wonder Woman in the DC Animated Movie Universe and Barbara Gordon / Batgirl in The Lego Batman Movie. Most recently, she's portrayed Claire Temple in five of the Marvel/Netflix series.

Heredia originated the role of Angel in the Broadway production and played the character again in the film.

Menzel rose to fame after she played the role of Maureen in the Broadway production, and she reprised the role in the film.

Like a few of her other costars, Menzel is best known for her work on Broadway. In addition to her role as Maureen — which earned her a Tony Award nomination in 1996 — she originated the role of Elphaba in the Broadway musical Wicked (for which she won a Tony), and the role of Elizabeth Vaughan in the 2014 musical If/Then (which earned her a third Tony Award nomination). She joined the cast of Glee as Shelby Corcoran and played Nancy Tremaine opposite Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey in Enchanted. And of course, there's her starring voice role in Disney's megahit Frozen franchise.

The ever-charming Diggs has created a prolific career onstage and onscreen. Since Rent he's starred in films like How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Brown Sugar, The Best Man and The Best Man Holiday. He's also had roles on several TV series, including Ally McBeal, Private Practice, Will & Grace, Murder in the First, and most recently The CW's All American.
