Gravity's Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón is back with another stunning film that has already drawn near-universal critical acclaim [1].

Cuarón's Roma is a semi-autographical drama that follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a young domestic worker who lives with Sofia, her husband Antonio, and their three young children. Cleo and Sofia's family deal with unexpected conflicts within their household that reflects the turbulent unrest occurring around them in 1970s Mexico City. In the trailer we see small bits of a quiet yet powerful film that shows how everyday life perseveres despite the chaos around it. Netflix described the film as Cuarón's "love letter to the women who raised him" that "draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst political turmoil."

Roma will be one of the first original Netflix movies to have an exclusive theatrical run before it streams. The drama is set for a limited theatre release in Los Angeles, New York, and Mexico on Nov. 21, with openings in London and other US cities set for Nov. 29. It will get a more international release on Dec. 7, with the official Netflix streaming date of Dec. 14.

The film has won various pre-season awards, including the 2018 Venice Film Festival's prestigious Golden Lion. It beat out several other high profile titles like The Favourite [2], Damien Chazelle's First Man [3], and the Dakota Johnson-led Suspiria [4]. Watch the trailer above.
