23 Romantic Comedies You Need to Have on Your Radar in 2018

Luckily for all the romantics out here, 2018 is promising a ton of exciting movies, many of which include stellar romantic comedies. Like any year in the last decade or so, movie theatres have been dominated by epic superhero events and beyond-big sequels, but if you're looking for some movies that are a bit smaller in scale but big on heart, we have the list for you. With some cute adaptations and continuations of beloved series on the big screen, as well as a few adorable contributions from Netflix, there's a little bit of love out there for everyone.

The comedy follows Jennifer Lopez's Maya, who is struggling to climb the corporate ladder at the big box store where she works because of her lack of an Ivy League degree. When her close friend and coworker (Leah Remini) gets her son to "Cinderella" Maya's résumé and internet presence — think: photos of her with the Obamas, climbing Kilimanjaro, a degree from Wharton — she suddenly finds herself with a fancy new job on Madison Avenue. Wondering when the romance comes in? Well, her husband is played by the charming Milo Ventimiglia, and judging from the trailer, he's Maya's sweetest supporter.

To be fair, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's remake of this timeless story looks heavy on romance, very light on comedy. Then again, since the first trailer — which teases the emotional relationship between Cooper's has-been rock icon and Gaga's ridiculously talented young singer — had us sobbing by the end of it, we felt inclined to include on this list.

If you have a craving for rom-coms that feel like they were made in 2005, then say hello to Little Italy. Emma Roberts stars as Nikki, an up-and-coming chef returning home to her family's pizzeria in NYC, which has developed a fierce rivalry with the pizzeria nearby, which happens to be owned by Hayden Christensen's family. Some Romeo and Juliet vibes quickly take over as Nikki falls for Christensen's character, and the pair have to hide their relationship from their families.

Release Date: Sept. 21

Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves reunite in the charming romantic comedy Destination Wedding, which is about two outsiders at a wedding who fall for each other.

Based on Kevin Kwan's novel of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians tells a fish-out-of-water tale of when an American-born Chinese woman, Rachel, is introduced to the crazy rich lifestyle of her boyfriend Nick in Singapore. But at heart, it's about Nick and Rachel's relationship and whether their love can weather their differences.

In the aftermath of World War II, a writer (Lily James) unexpectedly bonds with the people of Guernsey Island and decides to make them the subject of her next novel. Game of Thrones heartthrob Michiel Huisman stars alongside James in this period film, which has been adapted from Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows's 2008 novel of the same name.

Release Date: Aug. 10

Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer star in this film about a woman who gets left at the altar and then accidentally ends up on a honeymoon cruise with her estranged father. Naturally, she also strikes up a romance with a bartender working on the boat (Seth Rogen), so you can look forward to just as many raunchy jokes as heartwarming family moments.

We're going back to Greece in the prequel to Mamma Mia!, in which Lily James is playing young Donna during that fateful Summer where she meets the three (yes, three) loves of her life.

Two overworked assistants (Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell) hatch a plan to make their high-powered and demanding bosses (Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs) go a little easier on them: make them fall in love.

If you're looking for humour and romance wrapped up inside a family drama, check out Ali's Wedding. The film follows a musically gifted young man as he struggles to respect his Muslim family's wishes and go through with an arranged marriage, despite being in love with another woman.

Alex Truelove (Daniel Doheny) is your average high school senior with a great girlfriend, Claire (Madeline Weinstein), who seems like he has it made when it comes to his future. What he doesn't expect said future to include, however, is a blossoming romance with Elliot (Antonio Marziale), a handsome guy who opens Alex's eyes up to other sides of himself and his sexuality.

Gillian Jacobs, Vanessa Bayer, and Phoebe Robinson star as three BFFs who take a spontaneous trip to Spain (and later, as the title suggests, Ibiza) where they encounter love, drugs, ridiculously sexy DJs, and some serious sunburns.

Jane Fonda stars as a woman who introduces her three friends — Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen — to E.L. James's BDSM romance, Fifty Shades of Grey. While none of them go on to fall in love with emotionally guarded, billionaire orphans, the book does inspire them to find romance in a few unexpected ways.

Overboard has gotten the reboot treatment! Instead of following a spoiled heiress who gets amnesia and ends up falling for a rugged carpenter like in the 1987 original, the new film will see Anna Faris as Kate, a working-class mom who turns the tables on a wealthy, immature playboy (Eugenio Derbez) when he loses his memory.

After hitting her head in a Soul Cycle accident, a woman who struggles with serious feelings of insecurity (Amy Schumer) wakes up believing she is the most beautiful woman on the planet. Her newfound confidence allows her to score a new job, a new man, and more, but what will happen when she finally realises her physical appearance never changed to begin with?

Love, Simon is the adaptation of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, a coming-of-age tale about 17-year-old Simon as he wrestles with coming out on his own terms. Happily, romance ensues for young Simon.

Three close friends (Heather Graham, Angela Kinsey, Stephanie Beatriz) come together in this empowering film as they each face the rollercoaster ride that is love in this romantic comedy that was also directed and written by Graham.

Girls' Zosia Mamet stars in this indie romantic comedy about a struggling writer who finds the perfect Brooklyn apartment . . . but her ex lives downstairs. Of course, he's cute, sweet, nearby (never mind that he's dating someone else, played by Sarah Ramos), so an awkward real estate situation might actually end up working out for these two.

Anna (Rebecca Hall) and Will (Dan Stevens) were each other's first everythings: first kiss, first love, and first (and only) relationship. On the brink of a marriage proposal, the couple decides that, 10 years in, they should start sleeping with other people as a sexual experiment. Will their bond be able to survive the ups and downs of an open relationship?

We know the Fifty Shades saga was intended to be sexy, sensuous romantic drama, and indeed, the story is full of drama, but when Fifty Shades Darker came out, it was much lighter and much funnier, and we've been thinking of these movies as romantic comedies ever since. After all, laughing is the only way to get through one more character saying "Laters, baby." Christian and Ana say their vows and give their final bow in Fifty Shades Freed which has plenty of giggle-worthy moments.

This Netflix original stars Adam DeVine as an unlucky-in-love dude who's fallen for his soon-to-be-married BFF (Alexandria Daddario). She obviously only sees him as a friend . . . until he discovers a time machine that allows him to travel back to the first night they met over and over again, in attempts to woo her from the start.
