9 Romantic Movies You Will Definitely, Maybe Watch in 2019

12/12/2018 - 08:51 PM

If you're not exactly counting down the days until the next superhero movie comes out in theatres [1], perhaps these romantic films are more your speed. Most of these are romantic comedies — because nothing makes you feel warmer and fuzzier than a good rom-com — but a few are dramas that happen to be based around matters of the heart (if you want to change things up a bit). Take special note of a total Oscar-bait drama starring Alexander Skarsgard and Keira Knightley [2] called The Aftermath; it sounds supersteamy.

What Men Want

This gender-reversed What Women Want stars Taraji P. Henson as a sports agent who gets overlooked in her male-dominated profession. But she gains an unexpected advantage over the men she works with when she starts to hear their thoughts. Wendi McLendon-Covey, Max Greenfield, Kellan Lutz [4], Pete Davidson, and Aldis Hodge costar.

Release date: Feb. 8

Isn't It Romantic

Natalie (Rebel Wilson), cynical and fed up with love, gets hit over the head and wakes up trapped in a rom-com. She must avoid cliches and find her happily ever after in order to return to reality in this film, costarring Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine and Priyanka Chopra.

Five Feet Apart

Directed by Jane the Virgin [5] star Justin Baldoni, this tearjerker stars Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson as two teenagers with life-threatening illnesses who meet in the hospital and fall in love. You should probably pack a tissue or two.

The Aftermath

Alexander Skarsgard, Keira Knightley [6], and Jason Clarke star in this adult romance about three adults who find themselves living together in postwar Germany in 1946. The tension builds as their postwar grief turns to passion . . . and ultimately to betrayal.

Flarsky

Seth Rogen [7] stars as a down-on-his-luck journalist who decides to pursue his childhood crush and babysitter — and she has not only become one of the most powerful and unattainable women on the planet, but she's played by Charlize Theron [8]. That's a tough go, buddy. Alexander Skarsgard (clearly having a very busy 2019) costars.

Release date: June 7

Last Christmas

This holiday romance set in London stars Game of Thrones [9] badass Emilia Clarke and Crazy Rich Asians [10] charmer Henry Golding as a couple that cannot resist falling in love in the beautiful English backdrop — though the actual plot is being kept tightly under wraps. We do know that it will feature George Michael's popular holiday tune of the same name!

Release date: Nov. 15

All the Bright Places

Based on Jennifer Niven's YA novel of the same name, Netflix's adaptation of All the Bright Places stars Elle Fanning as Violet and Justice Smith as Theodore, two small-town kids who meet in the school's bell tower when they're both contemplating suicide. They form a bond and begin travelling around Indiana together for a school project, helping each other heal and falling in love in the process.

Someone Great

Get ready for your Girls Trip of 2019 with Netflix's upcoming buddy comedy. Jane the Virgin [11] star Gina Rodriguez plays a young woman who rebounds from a devastating break-up by taking a trip to New York City with her besties.
