11 Underrated Romantic Films You Need in Your Life

11/11/2018 - 04:30 PM

We're pretty sure that romantic films [1] might be the antidote to the modern world. For a couple of hours, you get to remove yourself from the real world and go head-first into one filled with love, happiness, and quirky best friends that can solve any drama. The only problem is, a few years ago Hollywood started to focus more on Marvel, so the rom-com genre started to fade away, leaving us with only our old favourites [2] to re-watch. But we are here to deliver some good news: in between all the classics, there are still some gems hidden away that you might have missed. So, here is our pick of 11 underrated romantic films that we think you need in your life.

Before We Go

Chris Evans stars in this independent movie that also happens to be his directorial debut. The film follows Nick and Brooke over the course of one night in New York City where they accidentally become each other's support system. Thrown together after a serendipitous meeting in Grand Central Station, they end up helping each other make some big decisions about life. This isn't a flashy Hollywood rom-com where everything is tied up perfectly at the end, but more of a realistic portrayal of a romantic movie.

The DUFF

Bianca's world is turned upside down when she learns that her school classmates see her as The DUFF of her friends. The DUFF as Bianca finds out, means Designated Ugly Fat Friend. Bianca is furious and determined to prove everyone wrong, so in true teen rom-com fashion Bianca enlists the help of the schools resident heartthrob Wesley to give her a makeover. This movie definitely follows the path of all its '90s predecessors closely, but it's a feel-good movie with a good message (the tried-and-tested but ultimately always true, it's what is on the inside that counts). The movie has such great, likeable leads too, especially the always funny Mae Whitman.

Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights

Don't let the "Dirty Dancing" in the title fool you. This isn't a remake of the classic, and to be honest we've never been able to see the links between the first and this second film, other than a small cameo from Patrick Swayze. Set in Cuba just before the revolution, Havana Nights is about a young, wealthy American school student who finds common ground with a local waiter while entering a dance competition together. A failure at the box office, Havana Nights is definitely not for everyone, but if you love dance movies and cheesy lines, we say you'll love this.

Before Sunrise

After a chance meeting on a train, Jesse and Celine spend the next 24 hours wandering the streets, cafes, and parks of Vienna. With only a few hours left until Jesse has to catch his flight back to America, he and Celine spend every minute they have together before trying to work out how they will see each other again. Set in 1995, in a world that didn't have Skype and mobile phones, Before Sunrise is all about fate and taking chances on love. This is the first film in the Richard Linklater trilogy about Jesse and Celine and we say binge them all. Romance at its best.

The film, based on the bestselling book of the same name, is a classic Hollywood rom-com that will pull at your heartstrings.

Something New

Kenya McQueen has always had a very strong idea in her head of the man she will end up with and her architect Brian is definitely not it, but sparks fly and her feelings force Kenya to take a look at her life and what she really wants. This is a smart and funny movie with a really great cast, too.

We couldn't have a rom-com list and not include Drew Barrymore [15] in it at least once. In The Perfect Catch (known as Fever Pitch in the USA) Ben and Lucy fall in love and are living a perfect life together, until baseball season starts and Lucy finds out Ben is obsessed by the Boston Red Sox.
