Popsugar Entertainment Us Movie Us Movie Trailer Theories and Reactions Us: We Can't Get Over Some of the Theories Fans Have Put Together After Seeing the Trailer 27 December 2018 by Mekishana Pierre Image Source: Universal Pictures In case you missed it, Twitter celebrated the holidays by freaking out over Jordan Peele's much-anticipated follow-up to Get Out. The Oscar-winning director debuted the first trailer for his upcoming horror film, Us, and fans subsequently lost their sh*t. To be fair to the fans, the trailer is the perfect mixture of suspense and terror. What starts off as an innocent holiday to a family beach house quickly takes a turn for the insane when doppelgängers show up and start murdering everyone. The film's main protagonists, parents played by Black Panther's Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke, have to protect their children from said sinister doppelgängers — which Peele revealed to Entertainment Weekly are known as "The Tethered." The two-and-a-half-minute preview doesn't reveal too many solid details about the plot beyond that, but it was still more than enough to get the gears turning for fans. Considering how Get Out was a complex maze of plot twists and metaphors that people are still puzzling out, we have no doubt that Us will be the same. So it's no shock that fans immediately began taking apart every second to form theories about everything from Nyong'o's tempo while snapping to Luniz's "I Got 5 on It" to the use of rabbits throughout the trailer. Though Peele has stated that the story of Us isn't about race, that definitely hasn't stopped fans from creating parallels between the imagery in the trailer and real life. Check out some of the most intriguing theories ahead, as well as some hilarious reactions to the trailer in general. Y’all so extra!” You really think he dropped a trailer (not to mention the scissors mailed to influencers) THREE months before the premiere because he DIDN’T want us talking? #UsMovie pic.twitter.com/nRRCfxBggo— April (@ReignOfApril) December 26, 2018 1 / 43 The fact that the clone's mouth is grotesquely burned shut can be understood to signal the silencing of black boys and men and the consequences thereof. As well as the defacement of Black childhood. The attack of the black body. #UsMovie pic.twitter.com/cHg1M3asPt— Thank You Stan Lee (@ForAllNerds) December 25, 2018 2 / 43 We've seen this shot before in the first looks but in context it's even more horrifying. Lupita's eyes. The blood stained shirt. Is she about to face off against her son's clone? #UsMovie pic.twitter.com/14ZzviJtU5— Thank You Stan Lee (@ForAllNerds) December 25, 2018 3 / 43 We gotta include this image on it's own--the faces, the masks, the duality all present within oneself and ones blackness. Let alone black womanhood. Whew. #UsMovie pic.twitter.com/Q6TdGhAyBW— Thank You Stan Lee (@ForAllNerds) December 25, 2018 4 / 43 Offred escaped Gilead just to deal with this ish 😭 #UsMovie pic.twitter.com/ISuet5tixl— Thank You Stan Lee (@ForAllNerds) December 25, 2018 5 / 43 Again, the rabbits are out of their cages. In dreams and stories a white rabbit is often a guide who leads a character into a deeper, unseen world. #UsMovie pic.twitter.com/ysHg0EFDM0— Thank You Stan Lee (@ForAllNerds) December 25, 2018 6 / 43 So the question begs to be asked--is this a psychotic epsiode? Perhaps inside the mind of Lupita? Is this a dream? Is any of this real? #UsMovie pic.twitter.com/QAyu3iycTs— Thank You Stan Lee (@ForAllNerds) December 25, 2018 7 / 43 Adelaide's (Lupita) connection to The Tethered is the hugest mystery. Especially the faces of black people. HIGHLY expressive and emotive. Confusion. Concern. Fear. Curiosity. Pensiveness. Anger. Disbelief. Sheer Terror. #UsMovie pic.twitter.com/ptHyNl36mT— Thank You Stan Lee (@ForAllNerds) December 25, 2018 14 / 43 Thought about rewatching the #UsMovie trailer but it's almost 10 p.m. pic.twitter.com/f940aGzHzY— Robert Young (@robertcyoung) December 26, 2018 15 / 43 Okay after looking at this for HOURS, I just noticed the scissors are shaped like a person's head and neck, and mirror images. I bet you it’s going to be a significant plot detail/twist....favorite this.— Purple...Reign (@LaReignStorm) December 25, 2018 24 / 43 Here's my guess for #UsMovie's plot: mom's estranged twin sister experimented with cloning to try to replicate/steal what she sees as her twin's "perfect life". The fact that Peele included the RORSCHACH TEST CARDS for the film’s promo alludes to it!
