This Is Us [1] really knows how to save the best for last! During the season three finale, the series finally gives us some resolution about the flash-forward and why everyone is going to visit Rebecca [2]. As the Pearson family gathers at Kevin's fancy new home, we get a few clues about where everyone ends up in the future. Let's just say, it's a lot! Bear with us as we break it all down right here.
Randall and Beth Are Still Happily Married
We can all breathe a sigh of relief, because Randall and Beth are still married in the flash-forward. While the writers certainly tried to fool us with the couple's marital troubles this season, in the flash-forward they make sure to zoom in on Beth's wedding ring when she greets Randall.
Toby and Kate Might Not Be Together Anymore
Not only does Toby arrive solo at Kevin's house, but he also isn't wearing a wedding ring. As he tells Randall he brought the sidewalk chalk (not sure what that is about, TBH), he says that he just talked to Jack and "they're on their way." While he could be referring to Kate, he could also be referring to Jack's partner. Randall then tells Toby, "I'm glad you decided to come." Hmm, why wouldn't he come to support his wife? Unless, of course, Kate is no longer alive in the flash-forward.
Kevin Is a Dad
Let's be real, we all saw this coming. After Kevin and Zoe decide to breakup because she doesn't want kids, the flash-forward confirms that Kevin does indeed become a father. As Toby comes in, a teenage version of Kevin is seen walking around the house before referring to Randall as his uncle.
Rebecca Appears to Have Alzheimer's
As Randall makes his way into the room to see Rebecca, it becomes clear that she doesn't necessarily know who he is. As he greets her he says, "It's Randall," before emphasising, "Your son Randall." While talking with The Hollywood Reporter, the show's creator Dan Fogelman didn't necessarily confirm or deny that Rebecca has Alzheimer's or dementia [4]. "I think there's a lot of ways it could be read right now," he explained. "I think that clearly Randall's introducing himself and something seems vacant there. But it's also been a bit of time, and this could be just kind of a different form of ageing or something else. I think that that's not an unexpected possible read of it, if that makes any sense."
Nicky Is With Rebecca
One of the most shocking moments in the flash-forward is that Jack's brother, Nicky, is actually at Rebecca's bedside. It appears Nicky has made amends with the Pearsons since we last saw him and has become a key member of the family.
Miguel Is Not There
On the flip side, one member of the Pearson family who is not present in the flash-forward is Miguel. Seeing that there is no mention of him in the scene, it's possible that Miguel has already died. Fogelman added that we probably won't be getting any answers about his whereabouts anytime soon. "He's somebody that you're not seeing at the house and at the bed," he told THR. "Could it be that he's just stuck in traffic? What is going on? It's a very good question that I can't give an answer for.
