5 Reasons You Should Spend Your Evening Watching Derry Girls on Netflix

18/08/2019 - 04:40 PM

Now that you've recovered from watching Euphoria [1], we've got another addicting series you have to add to your Netflix queue [2] this weekend. Derry Girls is back for season two, and if you've waited this long to get in on Ireland's hit TV show, we're honestly just plain jealous of you. It tells the story of a group of Catholic high schoolers growing up in Northern Ireland during the period of conflict known as "The Troubles." In short, "The Troubles" refers to a major conflict between Protestant unionists and Catholic nationalists in Northern Ireland, which resulted in riots, bombings, and violence from 1968 to 1998.

This might seem a little heavy, but at it's core, Derry Girls is a coming-of-age comedy about friendship, family, high school crushes, and figuring out your true self.

Still need more convincing? Here are five reasons Derry Girls absolutely needs to be on your Netflix watch list.

There’s a Ton of ‘90s Nostalgia

We're at a point in our lives where anything that has to do with the '90s is an immediate win in our book, and Derry Girls just so happens to take place during that decade. Prepare to obsess over the eye-catching outfits and relatable teenage angst as you go on the deep dive down memory lane. Did we mention the show is all about the girl power?

The Soundtrack Is Incredible

Speaking of '90s nostalgia, this show's got all your favourite '90s hits, and then some. As Erin, Clare, Orly, James, and Michelle navigate the ups and downs of teenage daily life, you'll be treated to a bevy of throwback jams including The Cranberries, Vanilla Ice, Salt-N-Pepa, Madonna [3], Cypress Hill, TLC, The Corrs, and yes, even Right Said Fred.

The Irish Accents Are Delightful

Between Colin Farrell [4] and Saoirse Ronan, we've learned that the Irish accent is music to our ears. Thankfully, we've got an endless supply in Derry Girls. Not only do we get to immerse ourselves in Irish conversations, we're treated to Irish slang, humour, and culture. And that's just good craic, isn't it?

The Cast Knows No Bounds

This cast could give Modern Family a run for its money, thanks to Saoirse-Monica Jack, Nicola Coughlan [5], Louisa Harland, Dylan Llewellyn, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, Tommy Tiernan, Ian McElhinney, Tara Lynne O'Neill, and more. The teenage friends are unbelievably relatable and hilarious. And then there's Erin's family, which provides the good-hearted riffing every great comedy needs.

Sister Michael Will Be Your Favourite Person of All Time

We know we already gave the cast one entire shout-out, but Sister Michael (played by Siobhan McSweeney) deserves isolated attention. If you ever thought nuns couldn't be hilarious, get ready to be stunned. Her one-liners and eye-rolls will have your sides aching from laughing so hard, and we wish she could be our best friend.
