Fans of The Wire Will Love Netflix and Drake's Revival of Gritty British TV Drama, Top Boy

"The olders are washed, the youngers fear nothing. And everyone wants to be a Top Boy."

That's the basic premise behind Netflix's new series Top Boy, which follows rival gangs fighting for control of East London streets. The series originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK from 2011 to 2013. Drake purchased the rights to the British TV drama in 2017 [1] and serves as the series' executive producer (which is actually his second upcoming series, after the HBO drama Euphoria [2]) alongside the show's original creative team: Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind for Cowboy Films, Ronan Bennett (who also wrote the series) for Easter Partisan, and Yann Demange.

The show's ten-episode revival on Netflix will pick up where the drama left off, with Dushane (Ashley Walters) returning from exile to his home in London to reclaim his throne in the highly lucrative drug market. He teams up with Sully (Kane Robinson), his "spiritual brother, partner, and sometime rival" who is also returning to the same streets after being in prison. Their plans put them at odds with Jamie (Micheal Ward), the young, hungry and ruthless gang leader whose ambitions leave no place for Dushane and Sully. The first look revealed surprise appearances from British rappers Little Simz (real name Simbi Ajikawo) and Dave (David Omoregie) in undisclosed roles.

"We couldn't be more excited for Netflix members around the world and a new generation of fans to discover the authentic, raw and real world of Top Boy," said Netflix's vice president of original content, Cindy Holland. "Drake came to us several months ago with a passion to help bring this series back to life, and we're thrilled to support the original creative team to do just that."
