What Is Netflix's Velvet Buzzsaw Movie About?

Velvet Buzzsaw: Netflix's New Thriller Pits Jake Gyllenhaal Against "Mesmeric" Killer Art

Anyone who has happily spent hours of any given day wandering through art galleries will probably need a minute after checking out Netflix's newest thriller, Velvet Buzzsaw. The film reunites Nightcrawler's writer/director Dan Gilroy with stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo for a story that's just as unhinged but focussed on the contemporary art scene of Los Angeles.

Gyllenhaal stars as elite art critic Morf Vandewalt, who seems to be the only one noticing something is off when Rhodora Haze (played by Russo) puts the "mesmeric" artwork of a dead artist on display, and they begin murdering all those who come in contact with them. Superchill, right? According to the trailer, the unknown artist used blood to create the red in his work, which somehow causes the images to come to life with serious homicidal tendencies. It seems ridiculous until you see Toni Collette get her arms buzzed off after sticking them into a giant metal ball (which everyone should know not to do by now). So yeah, the trailer is terrifying enough that we can all see it's no joke.

Zawe Ashton, John Malkovich, Daveed Diggs, Tom Sturridge, and Stranger Things' Natalia Dyer also star in the upcoming thriller. Check out the trailer above, and keep your hands by your sides at all times while you wait for Velvet Buzzsaw to hit Netflix and select theatres on Feb. 1.
