Charmed: Now That They Have the Power of Three, What Else Can These Witches Do?

15/10/2018 - 03:00 AM

The new Charmed [1] Ones are officially here, and we already want more. Now that we've met the new trio of magical sisters [2] behind the Power of Three, we can spend the rest of the season [3] watching as they learn to control their powers so they can battle the ultimate evil. The first episode introduces us to Macy, Mel, and Maggie [4], sisters who have to deal with the trials and tribulations of their everyday lives, as well as their magical ones. Like the Halliwell sisters [5] who came before them, each sister possesses an individual ability that will likely strengthen over time as they refine their connection to magic. Keep reading to learn exactly what each sister can do and the possible ways their powers can grow!

Macy

Macy, the eldest of the trio, has the power of telekinesis. As a scientist, Macy has the hardest time believing in magic, though she quickly figures out a way to make her scientific methods work in her witchy favour. There are several ways Macy could learn to use her primary ability, similar to the way Prue Halliwell did. She can use telekinesis to produce powerful waves of energy, deflect attacks, or combine her power with physical force for a sort of super strength. Because of her "impressive intellect," Macy can also find alternative methods to defeat the sisters' magical enemies — just like when she figures out that bicarbonate of soda will get rid of the demon possessing Maggie's ex-boyfriend, Brian. As the eldest, Macy also has the potential to be the most powerful of the sisters, which she shows signs of by being the first to master her powers.

Mel

Mel has the ability to freeze time, which, as Harry says, is pretty common with control freaks. Her powers are connected to her emotions and currently only work when she's not angry. If the series goes the classic route, Mel's development of her abilities will centre on learning to manipulate molecules. With more time, she'll likely be able to speed up molecules to the point that they explode, as well as reverberate them at a speed that causes them to rapidly heat up and either melt or burn. Of the three sisters, Mel is the most excited to learn about witchcraft and seems the most likely to explore brujeria [7]. This may open doors to new abilities or practices for the witches.

Maggie

Maggie, the youngest of the trio, has the power of telepathy, which Harry calls "a testament to your innate sensitivity or desperate insecurity." As seen in the first episode, this power also leans a bit toward having the power of empathy, as she's able to sense and understand Macy's childhood loneliness while reading her mind. She's also seen to have super strength while fighting off Brian, though she attributes it to Pilates. With time, Maggie will likely develop other psychic abilities, like being able to sense when something is about to happen, receive visions of the past or future, and reflect emotions and/or memories back onto another person.

The Power of Three

Together, the sisters are able to tap into the Power of Three, which is the collective power of the Charmed Ones [8]. It is said to be the strongest magic there is and enhances the sisters' powers. Unlike in the original Charmed, the sisters don't need to use the Power of Three Spell [9] in order to save themselves. The sisters also have the basic abilities that all witches do: the ability to cast spells, make motions, scry, and see spirits of the dead.
