Yes, If You're Brave Enough, You Can Visit the Place Where Fortitude Was Filmed

31/01/2019 - 12:10 PM

If you were glued to Sky Atlantic's thriller Fortitude at the end of last year, you might have found yourself wondering if you can visit for yourself (and if it's safe to do so). After all, if you set aside the killer bees and terrifying murderers, the remote landscapes just look so beautiful. So can you actually visit the town Fortitude? The simple answer is yes, if you're brave enough you can actually go to the area where the show was filmed. Though the show itself is set in a fictional town on the island archipelago of Svalbard in Arctic Norway, many of the outdoor scenes were filmed at Reydarfjordur in Iceland, and they're as jaw-dropping in person as they are on screen.

The fjord is actually the largest on Iceland's east coast (about 30 kilometres long) and, as you've no doubt realised from watching the show, it's one of the wildest. However, it's also got a road leading right to it, so it's the ideal place for a road trip [1] (if you're travelling anywhere in Iceland [2], you'll need a car). Recommended spots to visit include the waterfall at Buoará and the cute town centre with a rather romantic "Love Lane". The big draw, though, is the incredible Mt. Graenafell, which is 1,106 feet and only moderately difficult to climb — you should reach the top in a little over an hour. Even if you decide not to climb, you'll be rewarded by forests, caves, and beautiful gorges. Keep reading for a closer look at this incredible natural wonder. Just be on the lookout for bees.
