A Leading Lady, Indeed! Gaga Makes History With Her Unique Oscar Nominations

22/01/2019 - 05:20 PM

And now . . . presenting three-time Oscar nominee Lady Gaga [1]! Nominations were just announced [2] for the 91st Academy Awards on Feb. 24, and as anticipated [3], Gaga earned nominations in the best actress and best original song categories for A Star Is Born. The singer and actress was previously nominated for best original song for "Til It Happens to You," from 2015's The Hunting Ground.

Gaga has a strong chance of winning in at least one category, too. She's already won a Golden Globe [4] and a Critics' Choice Award for best song [5], and she tied with Glenn Close for best actress [6] at the Critics' Choice. Gaga is also up for awards at the Screen Actors Guild Awards [7] and the Grammy Awards [8], which will take place in the coming weeks.

Gaga is the first to be nominated for best actress and best original song at the Oscars, although it's worth noting that Mary J. Blige was nominated for best supporting actress and best original song for Mudbound at last year's show. This also means Gaga will be joining Janet Gaynor and Judy Garland, both of whom were nominated for their roles in earlier versions of A Star Is Born. (Barbra Streisand didn't earn a best actress nomination for the 1976 remake; however, she did win for best original song.)

While nominations proved to be triumphant for the leading lady, fans were disappointed that Bradley Cooper wasn't nominated for best director [9], although he was nominated for best actor and best adapted screenplay. The surprising snub, however, can't and won't outweigh the film's undeniable impact.
