27 Actors Who Would Be Perfect For Parts in the Wicked Movie

01/11/2018 - 08:03 AM

Broadway's hit musical Wicked is getting the big-screen treatment [1], and we can hardly contain our excitement. With Stephen Daldry set to direct and the show's original producers, Marc Platt and Universal, returning, we already have a good feeling about the remake. Even though we have to wait until 2019 for the movie's release, that hasn't stopped us from brainstorming a few cast ideas. While we would love to see Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth [2] reprise their roles as Elphaba and Glinda, there's also a whole slew of actors who would be perfect for the parts. Check out our top picks.

Meryl Streep as Madame Morrible

Streep is no stranger to movie adaptions of musicals. Not only did she star in Mamma Mia!, but she also got an Oscar nomination for her appearance in Into the Woods.

Uzo Aduba as Madame Morrible

No doubt Aduba would be amazing in this role. She is already familiar with the Oz universe after playing Glinda the Good [3] in NBC's The Wiz Live! in 2015.

Michelle Pfeiffer as Madame Morrible

Not only has Pfeiffer done her fair share of musical films, but she also has a little experience with magic. She starred as a witch in both The Witches of Eastwick and Stardust.

Melissa Benoist as Nessarose

Before she was the star of The CW's Supergirl, Benoist was showing off her incredible singing abilities on the hit show Glee. She is already a fan favourite for the role.

Jenna Ushkowitz as Nessarose

Ushkowitz is yet another former Glee star who would be amazing as Nessa. We think her sweet voice would match perfectly with the character's.

Anna Kendrick as Nessarose

Kendrick may be known for he role in Pitch Perfect, but her musical theatre background actually goes way back. At the ripe age of 12, the actress earned a Tony Award nomination for her role in High Society.

Victor Garber as the Wizard

He may be all about superhero shows nowadays, but Garber isn't a stranger to busting out in song. Not only did he make a guest appearance on Glee [4], but he also starred in the TV movies Cinderella and The Music Man.

Lin-Manuel Miranda as the Wizard

Honestly, this list wouldn't be complete without Miranda's name somewhere on it. After blowing us away with his hit musical [5], Hamilton, we're sure he would put an excellent spin on the beloved Wizard of Oz. He could probably even write a few new songs for the adaptation!

Neil Patrick Harris as the Wizard

If his hosting gigs at the Tony Awards [6] are any indication, Harris would bring just the right amount of kookiness to the character.

Tituss Burgess as Doctor Dillamond

The actor is certainly no stranger to putting on a good show. Not only does he make us laugh [7] on Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but he also caused quite a frenzy when he reprised his Broadway role as Sebastian in The Little Mermaid Live [8]. No doubt he would do the same if cast in Wicked.

James Corden as Doctor Dillamond

While we love his Carpool Karaoke sessions [9], Corden can certainly hold his own when it comes to his singing. Not only did he do a fantastic job hosting the Tony Awards this year, but he also starred in the movie adaptation of Into the Woods.

Morgan Freeman as Doctor Dillamond

Who better suited for the wise professor than the brilliant Morgan Freeman [10]? His singing voice is almost as soothing as his speaking voice.

Chris Colfer as Boq

Colfer would make such a charming Boq. And we already know he has the voice for the part thanks to his countless showstopping solos on Glee.

Skylar Astin as Boq

Before he was hitting a high note in Pitch Perfect, Astin was killing it on Broadway in the original production of Spring Awakening. Honestly, if he can pull of Georg's crazy hairstyle, then he can definitely pass for a munchkin.

Daniel Radcliffe as Boq

Not only does Radcliffe look the part, but he has had his fair share of stage experience starring in Broadway musicals like How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Aaron Tveit as Fiyero

Tveit is the ultimate leading man when it comes to musical adaptations. Not only did he star as Danny in Fox's Grease: Live!, but he was also Enjolras in the movie version of Les Misérables. Bonus: he's actually already played Fiyero before [11], so he knows the ropes.

Harry Shum Jr. as Fiyero

We can totally see Shum showing off his signature moves during Fiyero's big number "Dancing Through Life."

Jonathan Groff as Fiyero

Groff caused waves with his role in Hamilton this year, but his musical repertoire goes back further than that with roles in Glee, Spring Awakening, and Frozen, just to name a few.

Darren Criss as Fiyero

If his swift moves as a Warbler on Glee didn't convince you, his stint as Prince Eric [12] in The Little Mermaid Live certainly proved he would make one fantastic Fiyero.

Zac Efron as Fiyero

After High School Musical [13] celebrated its 10-year anniversary [14] this year, we've definitely been nostalgic for Efron's singing voice. Having the actor star as the male lead in Wicked would be the perfect cure for our Troy Bolton withdrawals [15].

Ashley Tisdale as Glinda

Not only does Tisdale look the part, but her High School Musical [16] character, Sharpay, is basically Glinda's spirit animal.

Renee Elise Goldsberry as Glinda

Not only has she caused some major buzz with her role in Hamilton, but we think Goldsberry's voice is perfectly suited for the lead role.

Anna Camp as Glinda

If Camp's character in Pitch Perfect taught us anything, it's that she was born to play Glinda.

Lea Michele as Elphaba

Michele would make an amazing Wicked Witch. Not only did she nail the high note in "Defying Gravity" on Glee, but Idina Menzel, the original Elphaba, played her mom on the hit show.

Phillipa Soo as Elphaba

The Hamilton star would certainly blow this role out of the water with her outstanding voice.

Amber Riley as Elphaba

Michele wasn't the only singer to defy gravity on Glee — Riley also gave a chill-worthy version of the hit song during the show's 100th episode. Her killer vocals aside, Riley has already proved she knows how to work the yellow brick road with her appearance as the Good Witch of the North in The Wiz Live!.

Samantha Barks as Elphaba

After killing it in Les Misérables, we have no doubt that Barks would bring that same emotion to the beloved green witch.
