Candace Returns, Joe Moves to LA, and More Things to Expect From You's Second Season

10/01/2019 - 10:57 PM

This post obviously contains You season one spoilers.

If you happened to watch Caroline Kepnes's bestselling thriller You [1] on Lifetime before it moved to Netflix, you're probably waiting with bated breath for season two [2]. Now that Beck (Elizabeth Lail) is dead and Candace (Ambyr Childers) has mysteriously returned and wants to talk to Joe (Penn Badgley [3]) about "some unfinished business," we have so many unanswered questions. Like, where was Candace this whole time? Did Joe kill her brother? What's going to happen to Paco? Will Dr. Nicky be released from prison? We NEED answers! Here's everything we know so far about season two.

The Premiere Date

Production for You is officially underway [5], showrunner Sera Gamble confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter back in November. While there is currently no set release date [6], the show's Instagram page hints that season two will be "coming soon."

Who Is Returning?

Of course, Penn Badgley is returning [7]. I mean, You simply would not be the same without him. Ambyr Childers will return as Joe's ex-girlfriend Candace after being MIA. "She's not nearly as dead as [Joe] thought," Gamble told Vanity Fair. Victoria Cartagena, who plays Paco's mom Claudia, is reported to be returning, along with Zach Cherry, Nicole King, and Kathryn Gallagher, who portray Ethan, Lynn, and Annika, respectively.

It's also possible that Elizabeth Lail [8] and Shay Mitchell [9], who plays Peach Salinger, may return, though it might be in ghost form. "I think [Joe] would feel haunted by some of the things that he felt compelled to do in season one," Gamble previously told Variety. "He certainly wasn't doing this stuff because he enjoyed it . . . We didn't write the character to be a bloodthirsty serial killer. We wrote him to be certainly misguided and, at times, one could argue, unhinged but always for what would seem like compelling and noble reasons."

And what about John Stamos as the swoon-worthy Dr. Nicky? Well, according to Gamble, "it's too soon to say definitely," but they have "been talking a lot about the character" and are "excited to keep telling that story."

The Story Will Take Place in LA

Given that the second book in the series [10] takes place in LA, it makes sense that season two will also be headed there. "Joe Goldberg comes to LA and he is a die-hard New Yorker so I can't say that he comes to LA and he instantly falls in love with the place," Gamble recently told THR. "At least at first glance, this is not Joe's kind of town, which is delightful. Starting to talk about what Joe would think of Angelenos has been so much fun in the room."

However, it seems season two may stray from the book a lot more than season one did. "We never really sweat how much we hew to the letter of the law when we're adapting Caroline [Kepnes]'s books," Gamble explained. "It so happened [with season one] that a lot of stuff remained intact, but the guiding principle has always been to kind of bring to life the spirit of the story and not to obsess too much over plot details . . . Caroline has always been on board with that, and I think that's going to continue to be the path in season two."

Either way, if the crazy finale was any indication of what we can expect, season two is going to be explosive!
