All The Forking Great Guest Stars Who Appeared on The Good Place Series Finale

04/02/2020 - 07:55 AM

The series finale [1] of The Good Place [2] didn't just send off our beloved Soul Squad [3] in style — it made time for a slew of guest stars to return and give us updates on all the colourful minor characters we've met throughout the past four seasons. While some of them just popped up for quick cameos and sight gags, a few of these guest appearances actually turned out to be crucial for the plot and meaning [4] of the final episode. Ahead, check out all the guest stars who showed up to help us all bid farewell to The Good Place and its delightfully quirky cast [5] of characters one last time.

Maribeth Monroe as Mindy St. Claire

Monroe returned one more time as the ultimate "medium" character Mindy, who is still living in her personal Medium Place and avoiding contact with anyone. Her final piece of the story links to Eleanor's last mission in the afterlife, with surprisingly sweet results. Mindy is definitely one of Monroe's most recognisable roles, but it's not her longest-running one: that would be her role as Alice Murphy on the Comedy Central show Workaholics, which ran from 2011 to 2017.

Maya Rudolph as Gen

Gen, aka the "Judge," has been a crucial part of the final season of The Good Place, and she pops up again in the finale to oversee the progress of the new system and to grant Michael an unexpected request. Of course, Rudolph is pretty much one of our most important funny ladies in today's comedy world, and she actually has been nominated twice for an Emmy (for guest actress in a comedy) for her work on The Good Place.

Jason Mantzoukas as Derek

Mantzoukas's AI-turned-celestial-being Derek showed up one more time for the finale, but by this point, he's been rebooted so many times that he's become an all-knowing being of energy that looks like a giant, mildly creepy floating head. His quirky resume includes a few recent voice roles, including in Dickinson and Doolittle, and he has voice roles on the animated comedy Big Mouth and the upcoming Invincible.

Mary Steenburgen as Michael's Music Teacher

Although Steenburgen's cameo was very brief, it was memorable for its real-life connection: she plays the music teacher who teaches Michael how to play guitar, and she's Ted Danson's wife in real life! Steenburgen is an Oscar-winning actress (for 1980's Melvin and Howard) who is currently starring on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist.

Nick Offerman as Nick Offerman

One of the most unexpected cameos in the finale was Offerman, as a woodworking expert who teaches Tahani his craft as part of her afterlife "bucket list." While the bit seemed like a reference to Offerman's Parks and Recreation character Ron Swanson, the episode's credits make it clear that this wasn't supposed to be an afterlife crossover: Offerman is credited as himself.

Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Simone Garnett

Simone makes her way through to the Good Place, joining her fellow test subjects and friends there. Howell-Baptiste's next role is a pretty exciting one: she's co-starring in the upcoming Cruella film alongside Emma Stone [7] and Emma Thompson [8].

Rebecca Hazlewood as Kamilah Al-Jamil

Tahani's seemingly-perfect older sister makes it through to the Good Place, repairing her relationship with her sister and, eventually, with their parents. Aside from The Good Place, Hazlewood has had guest roles on several hit shows, such as Lost and Grey's Anatomy [9], and starred on the popular British drama Bad Girls.

Mike O'Malley as the Doorman

O'Malley's frog-loving celestial gatekeeper has his work cut out for him in the newfound hustle and bustle of the revamped afterlife. He's also the one who sends Michael through to achieve his greatest dream. O'Malley is a longtime staple on TV, but he's probably best known in recent years for playing Burt Hummel on Glee.

Ben Koldyke as Brent

We get one very brief glimpse of Brent during the finale: still going through his tests in the afterlife, apparently taking a very long time to learn to be a better person. Koldyke also had a recurring role on the drama Masters of Sex and appeared in the military drama The Finest Hours in 2016

Brandon Scott Jones as John

Reformed gossip columnist John made one last appearance on The Good Place, popping in to Tahani's farewell party to say goodbye (and tell her he finally hooked up with Alexander the Great). Jones has most recently been seen in the rom-com Isn't It Romantic.

Eugene Cordero as Pillboi

When Jason is ready to move on, he throws one heck of a party, and, of course, it includes toasts from the people he loves most, including his reformed-criminal BFF Pillboi. Cordero also had a recurring guest role on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and currently stars on the truTV series Tacoma FD.

Meryl Hathaway as Brittany

Eleanor's former roommate shows up during a friendly dinner scene in the Good Place, apparently having died and made it through her own afterlife test. She actually has another Good Place connection: she had a role on The Comeback, which starred Lisa Kudrow, aka ancient Greek genius "Patty."

Angela Trimbur as Madison

By the time the final episode rolls around, both of Eleanor's roommates have joined her in the Good Place. Trimbur's next project is the upcoming Netflix drama film Horse Girl.
