Andra Day's Reaction to Her Historic Golden Globes Win Deserves All the Recognition

When Andra Day's name was called as winner of best actress in a motion picture drama at the ceremony during the 2021 Golden Globes, she immediately broke into tears. It's understandable as not only did she wholly throw herself into the role of Billie Holiday for The United States vs. Billie Holliday, she's only the second Black woman to ever win in the category; the first was Whoopi Goldberg in 1985 for The Colour Purple. As she frantically reached for her acceptance speech, because she didn't "want to forget anyone," she took a moment to recognise her faith. "I would just want to say thank you so much to God, Christ, my faithful and true with no shame. Thank you so much for bringing me through and getting me through," Andra said through tears as she went on to thank her friends, family, and the audience for being receptive to the film.

"I'm in the presence of giants with Viola Davis, Frances McDormand, Vanessa Kirby, and Carey Mulligan, you inspire me so much. And to the amazing transformative, dynamic, Billie Holliday, who just transformed me with this role, her spirit," she added before breaking down as Viola proudly looked on. "I love you all so much . . . God bless y'all." You can listen to her moving speech in the full video above.
