Ava DuVernay is taking a page out of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's playbook [1], because she just signed a multiyear deal with Spotify [2]. Through the partnership, the 48-year-old filmmaker will produce exclusive podcast shows that will "amplify a variety of voices and perspectives," Spotify told Variety in a statement on Jan. 21. The project will be overseen by Array Filmworks President Sarah Bremner.
"We couldn't be more excited to begin this new creative journey."
"Recognising the undeniable power of voice and sound, I'm thrilled to extend Array's storytelling into the realm of podcasts," DuVernay said in a statement to Variety. "The opportunity to work with Lydia Polgreen [Gimlet Media's manageing director] and her passionate team drew us to Spotify as a home for our audio narratives and we couldn't be more excited to begin this new creative journey."
In a separate statement, Polgreen added, "Ava DuVernay and her team at Array are at the forefront of telling powerful stories about the most pressing issues of our time."
DuVernay now joins the ranks of stars with Spotify deals including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex [3] and Michelle [4] and Barack Obama [5]. We can't wait to see what DuVernay has in store for us!
