Netflix's Most Bingeworthy Shows Are Its Foreign Series — These Are Our Top Picks

18/10/2019 - 04:10 PM

Happy spooky season! For all the horror lovers out there, October means that Netflix amps up its selection of scary-yet-satisfying content. While there are tons of great new films to choose from [1], Netflix's horror gems are surprisingly its foreign series — and we've got a few in mind that will get you properly spooked.

If you're anything like us when it comes to creepy content, then you've likely seen most of Netflix's horror section. That's why we dare you to take a look through the lesser-known titles that you wouldn't expect to be absolute bangers. There are a few international series, like France's Marianne [2], India's Typewriter, and Russia's Better Than Us, that may not be your first click, but we assure you that these series are horror gold.

When we say horror, we're talking everything from your typical demon possession films that linger well after you've watched the final episode to lighter watches with a more mystery-and-crime-solving approach. And if your version of being spooked is a sci-fi or post-apocalyptic thriller that keeps you at the edge of your set, then we've got that, too.

Ahead, are five binge-worthy foreign horror series that you won't believe you haven't seen sooner.

Marianne (France)

This is hands-down Neflix's best horror offering of 2019. This terrifying French series was released on Friday the 13th and it's the type of psychological horror that lingers in your mind well after you've finished. The story follows a novelist, Emma Larsimon, who calms the night terrors of her childhood by writing a series of bestselling horror books. But when Larsimon stops writing, the nightmares return and so does Marianne, the witch that haunts her books, her thoughts, and those she loves most.

Typewriter (India)

For true horror fans, Typewriter is Netflix's best-kept secret. The new series follows four kids and their dog who are set on finding a real ghost in their hometown. While it may seem like all fun and games on the surface, this Indian series is truly menacing. The young ghost hunters become obsessed with a popular horror novel, The Ghost of Sultanpore, and the haunted house where it was written, Bardez Villa. Will they find and stop the ghost before it finds them? This show is definitely worth a watch.

Better Than Us (Russia)

If you liked Ex Machina, then you'll love Russian sci-fi series Better Than Us. Similarly, it follows a beautiful, life-like robot named Arisa that's too intelligent for her own good. Scary smart, really. Arisa is the first and only "superbot" with human-like emotions. As she develops free will of her own, Arisa becomes harder to control, and we're all at the edge of our seat as to what she'll do next.

Dark (Germany)

If you love a sci-fi, time-loop type of thriller, then German series Dark [7] is absolutely the show for you. In a small town that relies on a questionable nuclear power plant as its main source of employment, two children vanish without a trace. While the town searches for the missing children, the mysterious lives of four families become entangled within a complicated web of the past, present, and future. Will they find the children and close the time loop before the next cycle begins?

Ghoul (India)

From the creators of Insidious, The Purge, and Get Out comes another Indian horror gem, Ghoul. Set in a dystopian fascist future, this chilling series focuses on a young military officer, Nida Rahim, who is tasked to interrogate a notorious terrorist, Ali Saeed.
